Happy Halloween! :D

Happy Halloween and Samhain, everyone! Today's also my "new" anniversary (as in it used to be September 15th as the anniversary of when Josh and I started dating 7 years ago, but now it's Halloween- this is two years since he proposed. I love you, Joshy!). :) I'm going over to his (well, his parents' house) for dinner tonight and to watch our annual Charlie Brown Halloween; hopefully I'll be feeling a bit better. This ear infection has me feeling pretty icky.

I don't have a real art update post this week- I've been working on a custom order for dolls, but I'm not going to blog about that until after Christmas. The only other thing I've been working on is a few random bits for a Goblin costume. You, know, from Goblins Like These, specifically Gork. Yup, I'm a dork, but Josh was flattered that I wanted to dress like one of his characters. Like, extremely happy- it was so cute! And hey, it meant a use for the wig that didn't turn out right; I turned it into a grass skirt. Wee, I'm crafty! ;)
This is the costume I was going for:

Here's what my quick (like worked on it for an hour or two) Gork costume looked like:

Yes yes, really crappy picture of me, but I wanted to get a picture of it anyway. I need to add a few more rows on the hat (don't want to completely cover my eyes, but the hat was lower until Josh added the pipecleaners) and a bunch more pipecleaners (to cover the gaps), and I also need to add more to the skirt to make it fuller. Someday I'll have a better costume, like with an accurate vest and maybe like a bodysuit thing in goblin color, but this worked for now. :)

And it was fun- we got to play the Goblins D&D game last night, so I was able to dress like Gork and play Gork, too. Yay for crazy goblin ambush commanders!

The other things I wanted to share were about last minute Halloween things. Today is the last day for the sale in my Artfire shop:

15% off everything (costume stuff, Halloween things, and autumn things) in the "Halloween" category of my shop- just enter the code HALLOWEEN09 when checking out.

And the other seasonal thing is the EAST (EarthPath Artisans Street Team) Harvest Treasure Hunt going on until the end of November- a new prize is awarded each week and a big prize pack will be given away in November. :)

Please enter this- we're not getting many people entering, so there's a good chance you'll win one of the weekly prizes or the big prize at the end!

Just go to the team blog here to read how to play- basically you just hunt through the participating shops for 5 Autumn items that have a little blurb in the description (hint- there are at least three of these in my shop), then reply on the EAST team blog with where you found them.

Presenting Pretties- L & B Accessories!

To pay it forward for being stalked myself, I'm now going to start featuring artists often on my blog. I'm going to start doing this post weekly ("Presenting Pretties" may change as a title, though- I don't know if I like it or not), as well as Talented Tuesday (interviews with artists I love) and Trove Thursdays (featuring lots of items in a theme), so lots of art posts all week. Hooray! :)

So without further ado, I present to you L & B Accessories. Patty makes very pretty sewn and embroidered wallets and bags:

This one's my absolute favorite in her shop. :)

Here are some other gorgeous items in her Artfire shop:

You can find L & B Accessories on Artfire at http://LBaccessories.artfire.com and her blog at http://lbaccessories.blogspot.com.

Trove Thursday- Spooky Good Time

Wow! For the second week in a row I was able to snag a treasury on a Wednesday, so that makes Trove Thursday nice and easy! ;) This one is filled with members from some of my street teams- I think I have EtsyFAST, EtsyHookers, POEST, EAST, FAE, and Createability in there.

This one is a Spooky Good Time:

Can you guys go vote?

Just a quick post- my Halloween Cat Chainmaille necklace... you know? This one:

It's in the Artfire Artisan Jeweler Guild's October challenge. Now I'm not asking you to vote for it since that's definitely not fair (I hate when people tell people to vote for them), but please can you go vote for your favorite? The poll is to the right on the AJG blog.

Thanks, guys! :)

Talented Tuesday- Ruthie of Rose Works Jewelry

Yup, a new feature for my blog! With Talented Tuesday I'm going to post interviews with some of my favorite artists who are all fun and talented people. Trust me, you want to know them!

When I decided to do this feature, I knew exactly who I wanted to interview first. I met Ruthie online a few months ago and she's fast become one of my best online friends. She's so sweet, positive, talented, helpful, and funny, and I always enjoy talking to her. We also have a lot in common, and her obsession with purple is on par with mine with green. ;)

What's your name?
Ruthie

Describe yourself in five words.
Eccentric, Eclectic, Artistic, Focused, Random

If you were a color, what would you be?
PURPLE

If you were a "Dungeons and Dragons"/fantasy character or creature, what would you be? (Can be a specific character, or something general like "elven bard", "centaur", etc).
I would either be a purple dragon or a fairy of some sort....

If you could live anywhere (or anywhen), where/when would it be?
I would live sometime in the future when there was a cure for asthma and migraines...and all sorts of other diseases!

What is your greatest dream or goal?
I want to grow up to be an eccentric old woman. Like a crazy cat lady, only not with the cats because I'm allergic to them, all indications are that I'm well on my way!

What was your very first piece of art? How long have you been an artist?
I don't remember! I know when I was a little kid I used to draw princess dresses, which is funny, because I was a total tom-boy. Mom also taught me lots of little crafty projects, although for some reason I couldn't understand crocheting at the time, and now I love it! My first piece of jewelry that I remember making was on a loom with seed beads...but I'm not even sure I finished that. The first piece that I made and actually wore was when I was 15. It was a wire-wrapped bracelet and I was so proud of it! Looking back at it now I can see that it had a lot of promise as far as color and composition went, but that the workmanship was pretty shoddy :P

If you sell your art, how did you get started?
My friends and family had been telling me for years that I should sell my work, and I had always secretly dreamed of working in a bazaar or fair. While I was away in school a friend told me about Etsy (and bought the first piece from me). I had been working building an initial inventory. I also was getting really sick around that time. Opening my Etsy shop gave me an outlet for my creativity and something to do as I battle my health problems.

What is the strangest thing you've ever made?
Hmmm...despite the fact that I tend to be rather random...I don't think I've made anything that strange!

Pick your favorite project/artwork- what is it and what inspired you on it? If you'd like to share, tell a little about the process you used from inspiration to completion of that project.
I have a series of bead woven necklaces that I've designed. The first one was designed in response to a challenge by Team Big Damn Crafters, and I so fell in love with the design that I've made several since then! My most recent piece is dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness and 50% of the sale will go to the Susan G. Koman fund. You can find it here:

What kind of advice would you give to other artists?
There are two things that are important you balance as an artist. Be true to your self, but also be aware of what works selling. To make money as an artist you need to be aware of trends and what work sells, but if that's all you focus on, you'll lose your inspiration as an artist. So make sure that sometimes you make things just because you love them! If the things you love happen to be what's selling...congratulations!

What is your favorite:
Color? Purple!
Quote? "If you only knew all the things I wanted to say and didn't..." Anne of Green Gables
Book? Oh don't ask me that! I have a list of about 50...
Character? (book or whatever) Again...I have a list of about 50...
TV show and/or movie? There are so many! I love anything scifi, fantasy, and I love crime dramas...
Season? Summer
Food? Anything chocolate!
Animal? Tiger
Art medium and/or supply? Seed beads :)

You can find Ruthie's shops here on Artfire and here on Etsy. Her art blog can be found here, and her blog with her writings, book reviews, and randomness is here.

That's all for now. Tune in next Tuesday for an interview with another talented artist! :)

Random Magic tour stop

I was promoted from Honorary Witch to member of the coven, so that means I get to be part of the Random Magic Blog Tour. Hooray! Welcome to anyone stopping by on their trek from blog to blog, and to my regular readers: stick around, share in my love of books, and follow the tour!

You can find my review of the book here. I'm also sharing today's tour date with Becky, who has an interview up on her blog with the author, Sasha Soren. (Becky also has a post up with bonus info about the book- that's here.)

Tada! You've discovered bonus material! In Random Magic, quite a few authors make an appearance, and I get the honor of posting some information about that subject.

Reader Notes: Celestial Roll Call: Writers Featured in Random Magic

Wouldn’t it be nice to meet your favorite writers at one big literary party? In Random Magic, that’s exactly what happens!

Callie, the First Muse, is friends with every writer ever born, and so it’s not unusual at all for her to throw a bash attended by, say, Mark Twain or Edgar Allan Poe.

In fact, you’ll meet both writers at one of Callie’s parties – along with their fellow party guests, Charles Baudelaire, Lord Byron, NoĂ«l Coward, H.P. Lovecraft and Dorothy Parker.

((Meri's note: I'm trimming this post and only posting some info about each author, because otherwise this'll be very long. However, I also made a backdated post here with much more information about the authors and pictures of them, so please go check that out. It's much more interesting than this condensed version! :) ))

Plum (P.G. Wodehouse): Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse, whose body of work includes dozens of quirky, satirical novels and collections of short stories. He was also a playwright and lyricist. His work was often dismissed by critics as being lowbrow literature, simply because so much of it is just plain funny, and thus, not Serious Literature.

However, anyone who’s picked up a work by Wodehouse knows just how much mastery he had over the English language, and how skilled he was in devising delightfully preposterous and entertaining plots and predicaments. His family and friends called him Plum.

Dosty (Fyodor Dostoevsky): Writer, essayist and philosopher, whose profound understanding of the human psyche and soul are seen clearly in several classic works: Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, and The Brothers Karamazov.

Dostoevsky described himself as a dreamer when he was a young man, but his later character was marked by several tragedies and hardships, including the death of his mother, the murder of his father, poverty, a stint in the army, fits of epileptic seizures, his imprisonment in a Siberian prison, and the death of his wife Maria Dmitrievna and brother Mikhail.

Twain (Mark Twain): Novelist, essayist and humorist. Born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, he chose the pen name Mark Twain as a memento of his days working on riverboats. The phrase “mark twain,” was riverboat slang meaning that the water ahead was “two fathoms deep,” and thus, deep enough for the safe passage of ships.

Twain’s best known for his novels The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, but also wrote funny, satirical books about his ramblings around the world, including Roughing It, Following the Equator and Innocents Abroad.

Twain was both studious and entertaining, and his humor was -- and still is -- especially appealing to folks with a hearty appreciation for the dryly comical.

The Bells (Emily Brontë): Novelist and poet, best remembered for her only novel, the passionate and gloomy Wuthering Heights. During her lifetime, she published under the pen name Ellis Bell.

The Bells (Charlotte Brontë): Novelist, and the firstborn of the Brontë sisters (Charlotte, Emily, and the youngest, Ann), all of whose novels became standard works of English literature.

She was the last surviving Brontë sister, as both Emily and Anne, as well as their brother Branwell, died young. Charlotte, who wrote gothic romance Jane Eyre, wrote under the pen name Currer Bell.

The Bells (Anne Brontë): Baby sister to Emily and Charlotte, and the author of Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Agnes Grey was based on her own experience working as a governess; her father was a poor clergyman, so his daughters were well-educated but without means.

Although only in her early 20s when her books were published, both novels were well-received and popular. Unfortunately, her second novel was also her last, as she died of tuberculosis a year later, at the age of 29. Anne wrote under the pen name Acton Bell.

Baudy (Charles Baudelaire): French poet, critic, and translator – and licentious gadabout, carouser and opium eater. In between all that lush decadence, however, he managed to write a brilliant book of verse, Les Fleurs du mal (The Flowers of Evil). Although folks in his day were appalled by his lush, erotic and darkly passionate verses, The Flowers of Evil later became a standard of French literature. Although immensely talented, Baudelaire died in poverty.

Dot (Dorothy Parker): Writer, poet and wisecracker, who wrote for The New Yorker and was a founding member of the Algonquin Round Table. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algonquin_Round_Table] Her political involvement with left-wing politics landed her on the Hollywood blacklist in the 1950s. [link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_blacklist]

Although she was a published poet, screenwriter and established theatre critic, she was better known for her disastrous love life, problems with depression, love for the drink -- and a world-weary, sardonic wit that helped her deal with all the rest of it.

H.P. (H.P. Lovecraft): Howard Phillips Lovecraft was an author of horror, fantasy, and science fiction. His works were dream-like, grim, cynical and deeply pessimistic. H.P. invented the idea of the Necronomicon, a grimoire allegedly written by the mad mystic, Abdul Alhazred. The lure of a secret book of magical power was so strong that many readers believed the book actually existed.

Although his readership was small during his lifetime, his work exerted a powerful influence over succeeding generations of writers of horror fiction.

Gloomy George (Lord Byron): George Gordon Byron, later Noel, 6th Baron Byron, of Rochdale, FRS, and commonly known as Lord Byron, was a poet and one of the most notorious literary figures of his day. His best-known works include the poem “She Walks in Beauty” [http://www.bartleby.com/101/600.html] and “The Sea.” [http://www.geocities.com/cptblood_1999/page2.html].

A later chapter header in Random Magic includes two lines from “The Sea,” in tribute to this stormy poet whom lover Lady Caroline Lamb called “mad, bad and dangerous to know.”

Shakes (William Shakespeare): William Shakespeare was a poet and playwright, widely regarded as one of the greatest dramatists in the English language. He’s often called England's national poet and the “Bard of Avon.”

His surviving works include 38 plays (including Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, Romeo and Juliet, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream), poems, and 154 sonnets. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright in history.

(Reader note: You can find another tribute to Shakespeare at the end of Chapter 19 in Random Magic!)

Assorted Russian poets (Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, et al.): Although we don’t meet them in the book, Callie’s party quite likely included famed Russian writers Alexander Pushkin and Mikhail Lermontov, both of whose works (and lifestyles) were influenced by Lord Byron – thus, in the book, they’re simply his good mates who came along for a roisterous night out.

Poe (Edgar Allan Poe): Writer, poet and editor, famous for his lurid and dreamy tales of mystery and the macabre, and considered to be the inventor of the detective-fiction genre. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, unfortunately resulting in a life of straitened finances and poverty.

In Random Magic, one of Callie’s closest friends is a shape-shifter, who travels in the form of a raven. His name is Nevermore. Nevermore’s name, of course -- and the name of his cousin, Quoth -- comes from one of Poe’s most well-known poems, “The Raven”.

Hosky (Oscar Wilde): Oscar Wilde was a playwright, poet, the author of several short stories and one novel. His nickname at school (Oxford) was “Hosky.”
Oscar, though a brilliantly gifted writer, was even more famous for his scathing wit, clever quips and outlandish style, becoming one of the greatest “celebrities” of the late Victorian era. Several of his plays are still hugely popular, including The Importance of Being Earnest and Lady Windermere’s Fan, both of which have seen big-screen adaptations.

Noelie (Sir Noël Peirce Coward): Born December 16, 1899, he was a playwright, actor, composer, director and singer, famed for his flamboyance, cheeky elegance and quick wit.

He started writing in his teens, and his body of work includes 50 plays, among them Private Lives and Present Laughter, which are still performed today. He composed over a dozen musical theatre works (including the operetta Bitter Sweet), poetry, short stories, the novel Pomp and Circumstance, and a three-volume autobiography.

Reader note: If you’re curious about the lives of any of the writers mentioned, please feel free to visit Wikipedia, which was a valuable resource in compiling these biographical profiles for your reading pleasure.

The biographical details of all these creative man and women are fascinating in their entirety. Happy reading!

And, lastly, it might not yet but January 19, but if you have a moment to spare, let’s raise a glass to Poe -- and Hosky, Shakes, Dot, Baudy, The Bells, Gloomy George -- and other departed friends, lovers, sarcastic quippers and mad geniuses. Thank you for leaving us with so many wonderful words to savor, puzzle over, mull over, quote, recognize, laugh at, cry for, act out, act on, and devour with gratitude and appreciation. Huzzah!

I need some shipping help

I realized recently that I really really should insure my runes, dolls, and blankets (well, blanket- right now I just have one) to other countries as well as the US; before I was only insuring stuff to the US. I really don't want to lose a one of a kind item in the mail, but the problem is now the shipping on those things is so high! I even weighed the items and checked on the USPS website what Registered Mail costs for those weights, and I know I've got them accurate.

Would someone pay $20 shipping on a $25 item? How about on my custom dolls that are $38? I don't know where to draw the line; I KNOW I want insurance on those custom dolls because they take days to make (I know I'm way undercharging at $38, but that's something I'll have to raise later).

I'm just torn here; I don't know how to mail these- either I keep the shipping costs accurate and risk scaring people away with them looking so high, or I eat about $15 and not earn anything from them, or I don't insure them and I risk losing an item I put a lot of time and love into and have to refund the buyer.

I had them set up originally with a message that people could contact me if they wanted insurance, but I doubt everyone notices that or would bother, then if it gets lost, there's nothing I can do. Grr, shipping! Any advice? Please?

Right now I have a message on the items saying:
I ship everything to the US via USPS First Class with delivery confirmation and shipping insurance.

For other countries, I ship my dolls, runes, and blankets via Registered Mail (so they're insured) by default, hence why that shipping looks so high. If you'd prefer for them not to be insured (so the shipping would be cheaper), please contact me.

Does that help?

So far I've only changed the prices over on AF- I'm waiting until I figure out what to do before I change them on Etsy, too.

Edit: Okay, problem solved (I think). I'm going to put the international shipping at the basic First Class rate, then put all over the place (in listings, my announcement, my policies, etc) that if people outside the US want insurance, I can give it to them, but it'll cost extra so they'll have to contact me for it (I'm also going to send an email to international customers to ask if they want insurance, just in case they missed my policies). I also included in the policies that if they don't opt for the insurance, I can't replace the order or refund them if it's lost. (That's not going to be set in stone, though, because I want my customers to be happy, so I'll try to fix things first. I just want it there to be safe.) I think that'll work better. :)

Whew, I definitely feel better having that all set and figured out!

In need of a chair

Fairly short update today; I haven't been feeling too great today, so I don't want to sit at the computer too long. I'm hoping Josh can get me a nice computer chair for Christmas- right now I'm using a secondhand chair my sister's ex boyfriend got from a deli where he worked. Needless to say, it is not a good desk chair, especially for someone with back problems. Plus I'm planning on sitting at the computer a lot over the winter and watching tv and stuff on that (since I obviously can't craft outside in the winter), so I'll definitely need something better.

So yeah, if anyone knows a good place to get an inexpensive but comfy desk/office chair with good back support, please let me know!

I've got two things to update about today:
~ My Plurk friend ViridianMuse posted my interview on her Artfire blog today. Thanks, Chelsae! It was a lot of fun to fill out, too! :D

One of these days I'll get around to putting together the list of interview questions I started a while ago because I'd like to start featuring artists on this blog. I like reading about other artists and their inspirations and work, so I think this would be a fun feature, especially if I ask odd questions. ;)

~ Josh linked me to a webcomic (reallifecomics.com) this week that's been running a story arc about crochet and yarn. Said story arc starts here and is still going. I can definitely relate, what with having a fiancé who I always end up making video game-related art for (and strangely enough, I've also been tempted to make him a Mario quilt, but haven't had the chance yet).

LOL! And there's like a comedy act going on behind me. The dog keeps trying to climb up on the bed, but can't jump up there (I don't know why- she's not that small, and the puppy half her size can do it), so I have to pick her up. Except she keeps jumping down whenever she hears something, then ten seconds later wants back up. What am I, an elevator? I'm the cat's servant, not yours, dog. :-p

Art update- plushies, ears, earrings, sale...

I haven't posted an art update in a while, huh? Books have kinda been taking over my blog, and I have another review queued up. I also got promoted from Honorary Witch to member of the coven, so I'll be posting more Random Magic stuff next week.

Now, though, I want to ramble about stuff I've been working on and listing.
~The green elf wig- well, I kinda gave up on this for now. It may still work, but I've put it on the back burner for now.

~Dolls, dolls, and more dolls: I have four, likely 6 custom plushies to make, 4 of which have to be done and to the person by Christmas. I'm not going to blog about the two I'm working on first until after Christmas, but I will say that the first one is well on its way- it's got a body and some pants. Tomorrow I'm going to do the sleeves, then start on the second doll in that commission so I can make the accessories for them at the same time. I'm kinda stressed out about these, but I think if I can do a little bit a day, I'll be fine. They don't take that long to make (a week, tops, for each one), but I'll admit to getting stressed out easily. I got some custom order inquiries this morning, but they're all for things that don't too long to make (earrings and ears this time), so I'm going to finish those today if the people are interested.

After these are done, I need to start working on Christmas presents, so probably not much new for my shop for a while. The good news is, I do have a bunch of items made a while ago that I still have to list.

Here are some of the most recently made and/or listed things:
Yellow-green horns

Shiny ears

These were part of a trade/sale with my FAE friend Aquariann. Neither photo shows how pretty the things turned out; the horns are a really shiny yellow-green with brownish gold spirals, but I mixed some glittery powder into the brown paint to make it a bit sparklier. The ears are also sparkly- you can sort of see in this photo that I used silvery lamé yarn in with the tan. While making them I couldn't help thinking just how much like rice crispy treats they looked, with the light tan and the shiny whitish bits. Or maybe I was just hungry, lol.

Red and Black Cartilage Chain Earring - Queen of Hearts

Yup, more cartilage chain earrings. I call this one "Queen of Hearts" because it just reminds me so much of the playing card (or hey, if someone were planning to dress as the character from Alice in Wonderland- it would work great with a costume like that). This can be found here on Etsy and here on Artfire.

Silver and Black Moon Cartilage Chain Earrings

And I'll mention this pair of earrings because they deserve love, too, but they're not available at the moment because they just sold and will be going off to a new home. :) I really like these, so will likely be making more like this.

Psst! Don't forget about my Halloween sale going on in my Artfire shop!

I'm pretty sure you still have time to get the items before Halloween if you're in the US since shipping usually only takes about three days to get there. And hey, a lot of my shop is in that sale- ears, jewelry, runes, waist cinchers (one of these days I'll have to get better pictures of those- they're really cute!), and bracers.

Trove Thursday- A FAE Halloween

This Trove is a bit different in format because I was finally able to snag a treasury late last night (even using the tool on craftopolis.com I'm rarely at the computer at the right time). Since it's almost Halloween, I decided to make it a costume treasury- and since I'm a member of FAE (Fantasy Artists of Etsy) I knew I could find awesome costumey things by my teammates. ;)

The theme of this one is A FAE Halloween.
FAE treasury
If the treasury is still live (it expires Saturday afternoon), you can find it here, but if you want to see it after that, click the image to be taken to the Flickr page or click here to see the screencap full-sized. The "Alternates" are the ones that the curator of the treasury picks that don't show up for anyone else (at least not until they're switched in), so you get a top secret peek at them here. ;)

I suppose I'll link to the items the way I usually do to make it even easier to find them. :)

Another Random Magic post. What? It's fun!

So it deserves multiple blog posts. ;) I knew the book I just reviewed was fun, and now there's more! I got contacted and asked if I wanted to be an Honorary Witch for the Random Magic Blog Tour. This was very much an honor, so of course I jumped right on that and answered the fun questions I was sent. (I mean, I was asked to ramble about books? That's like my favorite thing in the word to do!) :D My interview as Honorary Witch (I love that term!) can be found on the tour blog here.

Like I mentioned in my review, definitely read this book; it's a lot of fun! I think the book comes out in January, but don't hold me to that (it looks like it's available already on Amazon?). I'm just a messenger of Awesome Books You Should Read (ooo, I should trademark that phrase).

To hold you over, though, here's a trailer for the book I found on the author's website:

And if you're still curious, check out the page about the book here and the blog tour (with fun stuff) here.

Here's part of the fun stuff- a quiz:

Book review- Random Magic

I finished two more books recently, but I'm only going to review the first now since this review got so long. ;) Both of these books star intelligent and interesting young females, so they were great to read back-to-back. Look for the second one soon. :)

Today's review is Random Magic by Sasha Soren, one of the books I got from the LibraryThing Early Reviewer program.

In a letter included with the book Soren said we shouldn't spill the beans about the package and things and I won't, but I do have to say that receiving this book totally made an otherwise feeling-icky weekend so much better! And I wasn't at all disappointed when I started reading it, either. ;)

This book is so witty and... well, charming.

I'll get to the downside first, to get that out of the way. I found the book to start and end a bit disjointed- don't get me wrong, most of the book is random and disjointed in a good way, but I just found the beginning and end to be a bit slow and disconnected; I think I would have preferred it if the book stayed more with the two main characters. I wanted to know more about them; I'm thinking because Soren did such a good job making them interesting! :) The only other slight problem I had with the book was a personal preference- at one point near the beginning the main characters visit vampires, and I think by now everyone knows my opinion about undead (needless to say, I skimmed a lot of those pages. Ugh, vampires are overrated so don't do it for me). I'll give Soren credit, though; she made those particular undead unique enough that I didn't flat out skip those pages like I would have otherwise (or give up on completely *cough*Twilight*cough*). To this author's credit, I think the other reason I kept reading those pages was because man, she can write! Even when it was a subject I wasn't interested in, I kept at it because the book was so enjoyable.

Anyway, to get on with the review, I found the rest of this book to be charming, interesting, and well-written. The author definitely has the skill to write something you don't want to put down (I don't think I put this book down the entire time I was reading it; I wanted to know what happened next!) and the creativity to write something utterly unique. The writing was witty and I loved all the random references throughout (I never did figure out the one in chapter 42, though. Can someone clue me in there? *puppy eyes* Apparently I am no good at anagrams, lol). The two main characters were great- Winnie is spunky, intelligent, and clever, and Henry is ... Henry. He's lovably kind of stupid oblivious, but he gets a lot of character development, so even though he's kind of pathetic, you don't mind and keep cheering him on.

I'm not going to go into details about the plot because I feel that spoils things, but I will say that the plot is engaging and fun and the cast of characters are just as well-written as the rest of the book (don't let my hatred of vampires stop you from reading this, please! In fact, feel free to ignore that part of my review as just one of my personal quirks). I've always been a fan of Alice in Wonderland, so I thought it was so neat that this story had that as a basis. The book also had mythological references and literary figures; I had to grin because those are two of my favorite things. This story isn't all a happy romp, of course, but that makes it even more interesting to see the characters' struggles and how they develop from them. Overall, though, this book is fun!

I will heartily recommend this book to anyone looking to read something new and entertaining; it's got friendship, love, strength, wit, adventure, magic, and a red feather. You can't go wrong with those things! I think it's a young adult book, but adults will love it, too. I know I did, and I suppose I count as an adult. ;) I'll give this 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.

(Psst: More reviews from other LibraryThing members can be [well, "will be"; at the moment there's only one other] found on the book's LibraryThing page.)

I've been stalked! (But in a good way!)

I found out yesterday that I was a victim of the Stalkers Guild on Artfire last week- my good friend Ruthie of RoseWorksJewelry nominated me. (Thanks, Ruthie!) My write-up on the Stalkers blog is here, and they awesomely posted about me all over the place! :D

I want to give a big big thanks (and a big Elfling hug!) to all the members of that guild for being so sweet and wonderful! You guys rock and made my day (heck, my week)!

I'm thinking I want to join the guild now so I can return the favor and help spread the talent of other artists, but since you're only allowed five guilds on AF, I have to decide if I want to leave one (there's a good thing about Etsy- you can be in as many teams as you want to, and I take advantage of that, lol), and if so, which one.

My name (and my doll) are in print!

I can't get the grin off my face- the French Nintendo magazine a picture of one of my video game dolls was published in arrived today (the awesome editor who contacted me about putting it in said magazine mailed a copy to me- a big big thanks to him because I had no idea where to find it!). I still need a friend to translate it, but the yahoo Babel Fish website gave me a general idea of what it says. It even mentions the Dark Link doll I made! :D

Here's the blurb I'm in:
My name's in print!
(I didn't take a picture of the whole page in case that was a copyright problem, so I just took a photo of my little doll and blurb at the top of the page.)

I'm so so happy about this! :D This is my first time being published, so I'm ecstatic!

Edit: Hooray! My French Canadian friend translated it for me. I love the added translation she put in parenthesis- Yahoo Babel Fish never would have told me that. XD It says:
"Crochet - it's not for grandmas (could also be read as wusses)
When she's not making jewelry, Susan Logue likes to make little crochet puppets. Her latest creation is a superb replica of Henry Hatsworth, the hero of the eponymous DS game. By surfing on her site, you can also find a rather well done Dark Link."

Halloween treasuries, hunt, and sale

Since I'm on a Halloween kick I wanted to share the two Halloween treasuries I'm in. They both expire in a few hours, so check them out while you can!
-My spiderweb pendant is in this "Webbed Delights" one by my Createability teammate cindylouwho2.

-My skull runes are in this "All Treats, No Tricks" treasury by my POEST teammate AutumnSkyAdornments.

Speaking of Halloween, don't forget the EAST (EarthPath Artisans Street Team) Harvest Treasure Hunt going on until the end of November- a new prize is awarded each week and a big prize pack will be given away in November. :)

Just go to the team blog here to read how to play- basically you just hunt through the participating shops for 5 Autumn items that have a little blurb in the description (hint- there are at least three of these in my shop), then reply on the EAST team blog with where you found them.

And of course I have to pimp my Halloween Artfire sale going on until the 31st. Please take advantage of it soon so you can get the items by Halloween. *puppy eyes*

And update about the wig I'm working on; it may work, but I'll need help pulling it into a ponytail because I'm not strong enough to hold my arms up long enough to sort through all the yarn so it covers all of my hair. Ah well, if it doesn't work, I'm only out a $3 skein of yarn. No big deal.

Random Halloween quiz thing and costume ramblings

Someone on my livejoural friends page posted this; I thought it was cute so I'll post it here, too. :)

You Are Pumpkin Donuts

You are quirky and cute. You have an offbeat, flamboyant style... and you always light up a room.

You are the icing on the top of the cake and the sprinkles on the donut. You add a little something special to the mix.

You celebrate the fall with great zeal. You love to dress up, decorate, and share the season with friends.

You always have the most unique costume on Halloween and the most interesting Thanksgiving meal. You put your own spin on it all.

I guess that's pretty accurate and I do tend to wear unique costumes- and by "unique" I mean "characters from books", lol.

As I was posting this I got an idea for my Inkyrius (from the Order of the Stick webcomic, so technically not a book character) costume. You know, V's mate? (Ex-mate now, I suppose.) This elf:

Yeah, he/she is an obscure character in an even more obscure fandom, but who cares? ;) I'm not sure if I'm going to be up to doing anything for Halloween this year, and if I do I want it to be simple, so I think this would be a good time to do this costume. Basically all I need is a wig, so I'm trying to decide if I want to spend the $25 to buy one (I did find the perfect wig on ebay) or try to make one out of yarn (like crochet a tight hat, then attach the yarn the way I do for my dolls). The yarn one would likely be too warm, though (unless I can crochet a more open hat base?), but on the other hand, it would be far cheaper, but on the first hand, it would take time to make. The good thing about the yarn wig, though, would be that I could attach crocheted ears to it, rather than having to wear a headband, as well. So yeah, I'm trying to decide what I want to do here and if I'll even be dressing up this year to warrant working on a wig.

Ooo, and I just had a better idea! I tried on one of my elf headbands and I think I can wear it slightly differently so it's over my forehead instead of the top of my head. My ears would be partly showing (since I'd need a ponytail), so I'd have to crochet maybe just ear tips to sew on the headband above my real ears to try to make them look pointy, and attach the yarn for the hair to the first row of the headband (which will also be green). This won't take nearly as much time to make as a hat. :D I still don't know if I'll be dressing up this year, but hey, it means I'll have a Kyrie costume ready for whenever, and everyone should have an obscure elf costume. ;)

Now to see if I have enough lime green yarn- I think I have almost a whole skein...

Herman the Frog? That's a new one!

Or, alternately, "Ears, ears, and more ears!", but we'll get to Herman in a minute.

This week has been nothing but ears (and as my fiancé says, that would sound odd coming from anyone but me, lol). I got four pairs finished, but the one isn't going to get posted yet because I need to finish the second part of that custom order (horns). Oh, and I finished a lot of earrings, as well. I think the "e", "a", and "r" keys on my keyboard are probably worn out by now.

The first ear I want to share is my newest design; I was trying to think of new kinds of ears to make and of course I jumped right to "cat ears!" since we all know I'm a crazy cat lady. ;) And of course, these are based on my black kitty, Clarabell.
Black and Grey Cat Ears on a Black Headband

I'm really proud of these- even my dad (who normally thinks my art is a bit odd) said how much they look like cat ears. That made my day, escpecially since a lot more work goes into these than the elf ones, since that grey bit in the center? That's a completely different crocheted triangle that has to be sewn onto the black part, and it's never easy to work with the floofy Fun Fur yarn.

I also want to share how they can bend:
Black and Grey Cat Ears (closeup)

Since these ears (like all of them) have pipecleaners crocheted around the outside, you can bend them and they'll stay bent.
You can find these here in my Etsy shop and here on Artfire.

Next up are these Orc/Goblin ears:
Crocheted Orc Goblin Ears on Black Headband

These are the same design as my regular elf ears, just green. (Now I'm tempted to make other ones in oranges and yellows to represent the Goblins my fiancé draws, although I'd likely have to change the design some.) Anyway, the Orc ears are here in my Etsy shop and here on Artfire.

I also made two custom orders this week. One was for a pair of my smaller ears:
Hobbit ears

And the other was a really unique request- someone wanted a pair of Yoda ears for her son. How cool is that! After looking at pictures of said Muppet, these are what I came up with:
Green elf ears (Yoda)

They're child sized, so the headband is a bit shorter than usual and the ears are slightly closer together. I also added an extra row of crochet around the ears to make it so they had a ridge on the outside to look more accurate than my regular ears would be.

And funny story about this- my grandfather asked what I was making and when I told him, he had no clue who Yoda was and has never seen Star Wars. I told him Yoda was a Muppet, like Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, assuming that everyone knows Kermit the Frog and he replied with "Herman the Frog? Miss Kitty? Piggy? I've never heard of them, either". By that point I was laughing; my grandfather has all of his wits, but somehow he's managed to miss the Muppets in that, what, 40 years they've been around? It's not like they're a new thing, but I guess it's not something he would have been interested in. Anyway, now I think I'm going to start calling Kermit "Herman the Frog", LOL!

And before I forget, here are my most recent earrings:
Falling Leaf Cartilage Chain Earring:

This is here in my Etsy shop and here on Artfire.

Halloween Party Cartilage Chain Earring:

And this is here in my Etsy shop and here on Artfire.

Okay, am I done typing "ear" yet?

Oh! And don't forget about my Halloween sale going on until the 31st!

And I also almost forgot to mention that another of my friends featured me on her blog this week. *does the happy dance!* Thank you, Theresa! You guys can find it here. I gotta say, "Meri Monday" is now my official favorite day of the week. ;)

I'm having a halloween sale!

Somehow both me and my computer got sick at the same time; I've had a nasty cold and my poor Raddy had to be wiped and reformated (thank you, Josh!) and is now Radagast2.0, and has come back as a new incarnation. Hmm... maybe I picked the wrong wizard name? ;) Anyway, I got a lot of reading done over the weekend (I'll be reviewing the cute book I finished soon), and I'm feeling a bit better, so that means I get to blog again. Hooray!

First up, I'm really really glad Josh finished up my computer because I had Big Things planned starting this week. And by "Big Things", I mean, "big Halloween sale" because Halloween is such a great holiday. :D

SAVE 15.00 % on items in the "Halloween" section

And since I do fantasy things, this means a LOT of my shop is on sale (I think there are 35 things out of about 100- and that's not counting the 5 or so more things I still have to list). Visit my Halloween section of my AF shop, and just use the code HALLOWEEN09 when checking out, and you'll get 15% off the items.

Also, my custom elf ears are on sale, too, so if you ever wanted elf ears, here's your chance! The only downside with this is if you want them, you have to snatch them up quick because I don't think I'll be able to make and get them to people in time for Halloween after the 20th or so. I'm already currently in the middle of making three pairs (yay, people like my ears! ... that sounds odd), so I'm trying my hardest to get these all done in time.

So please, check out my sale (*puppy eyes*) - I even made fancy new banners and an avatar for it to get into the spirit of things (although I'm going to be adjusting the font in the AF banner slightly; it looks wonky).

And in other news:
-I heard from the editor of the magazine who originally contacted me about the Hatsworth doll, and he's going to send me a copy. Hooray! I was having a heck of a time finding magazines in another language. I'm so excited to be able to see my little doll in print! :D

-My good friend Ruthie featured me on her blog! That was such a pleasant surprise after being sick for a few days. Thank you, Ruthie! *hugs!*

-Hmm... I thought I had a third point. Ah, well; I'm still pretty out of it, so you can excuse my lack of memory here. Oh! I remember:

-Don't forget to check out the treasure hunt (with prizes!) the EAST team is holding. A new prize is awarded each week, and a grand prize winner is picked at the end of November.

-And please stop by and spread word about the charity auction the Artisan Beaders team is running- that one ends on the 16th, and we're still looking for bids. It's for a great cause and the winner gets a pretty bracelet. :)

I need some help- anyone speak French?

I just got an email today from someone who saw my Henry Hatsworth doll in the French Nintendo magazine. I knew it was going to be in there because I gave one of the editors permission (hey, who wouldn't want to share cute dolls), but I didn't know when. I'm thinking it's probably in the latest issue (or else I likely would have heard from someone before, you know?), but since I don't speak French, I don't have a clue where to look to get my hands on a copy of the issue.

So I'm sending out a call to arms- please ask around and see if you can find someone who speaks French and/or can find me a copy of the magazine; I think it's "Nintendo - Le magazine officiel" and might be the French version of the UK magazine. This is my first time being published and I'd love a copy that has my little Henry in it! *puppy eyes*

Lots of Halloween art and a new blog layout!

Oh man, am I behind posting updates about things I've made; this is going to be a very image-heavy post. You've been warned. ;)

First, though, I want to point out (you know, in case you're reading this in an RSS feed) that after over a year of putting it off, I finally changed the layout of my blog. It took me about five hours, but I think I'm happy with it. :) And hey, now it matches my websites and shops and looks all foresty (I'm really proud of that header banner- that's my own photograph taken in the backyard).

I don't really like how it's so boxy, but blogger isn't very good for working flat html; it makes you use templates. I'd have preferred just coding, but eh, what can you do? I am upset that they're only letting me use 10 tags per post when I used to be able to use 20 or so. WTF? I'm an eclectic artist- I can't use that few and still keep track of my posts! (I was using my blog to keep track of the stuff I made.) Grrr...

Anyway, onto the art! (These are all in my Etsy shop, too, but there are too many and my computer is too slow, so I'll just link to my Artfire pages.) I've been renewing old Halloween items that I had let expire a long time ago, but that I touched up and made more to my liking. One of them is this Halloween dreamcatcher:
Halloween Star Dreamcatcher
It's here on Artfire.

The other things I redid were pumpkin runestones and a spider pendant necklace. I also made another set of skull runestones because people seem to like those. :)
Skull Elder Futhark Runestones

Two more Halloween things that went up this week were this Autumn Pumpkin earring:
Autumn Pumpkins Cartilage Chain Earring

And this pair of All Hallows Eve dreadfalls:
All Hallows Eve Falls - Halloween yarn dreadfalls

I was also busy with costume-y things, as well! I made these ears (she wanted them for a goblin costume- how cool is that!) as a custom order for someone:
Grey elf/goblin ears

And for my shops I made these blue and black dragon horns:
Blue and Black Dragon Horns

And this pair of Halfling/Hobbit/Half-Elf/Gnome/insert-race-with-slightly-pointed-ears-here ears:
Crocheted Hobbit Halfling Gnome Ears on Brown Headband

I'm especially proud of these because they're a completely new design that I had to make a new pattern for. :) I'm going to be making a pair like this for myself soon for my Elfling costume. ;)

Whew, I think I'm caught up now! There's still more to come- I've got four more pairs of autumn earrings in my "to list" queue, as well as another fun pair of costume ears. I'll also be posting about a big Halloween sale I'm running in my Artfire shop next week, so stay tuned!

One of my street teams (the Artisan Beaders) is running a charity auction on our group blog until Friday, October 16th. The pretty thing we're auction off is this "Sea of Hope" charm bracelet:

Members of the team contributed handmade charms (mine's that blue and green swirly clay ball with a shell in the center), and the proceeds are going to be donated to RAINN, The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network.

It's a great cause and such a lovely bracelet you could win! For more information, visit the team blog.

Book reviews- Tolkien and a cat anthology

I've been meaning to post these reviews for a while but kept putting it off. That means this is going to be short because I can't remember everything I wanted to write about them. Heh.

First up, The Silmarillion.

I did a sort of review almost a month ago, and after finishing it, I'll still agree that the comments the Rifftrax guys made in the FotR movie were amusingly accurate:
"Ah, he's reading The Silmarillion and trying desperately to pretend he's enjoying it."
"Ughh... 'Fëanor imprisoned the light of the two trees that illuminated Valinor'... oh god, I can't make it through this thing."

Don't get me wrong, this is definitely a book worth reading for a Tolkien fan, but it was hard, and that's coming from someone who has a degree in English and wants to become a literature professor. I was determined to get through it since I gave up last time, and after over a month (never has it taken me so long to read such a short book!) I finally finished it. Where the trilogy has interesting and developed characters (by now everyone knows that's the main thing I look for in a book) and even some humor (The Hobbit definitely has humor), The Silmarillion reads like a dry history book and none of the characters are developed enough to really be interesting. It doesn't help that so many of the characters have names that sound alike and each one has about three names a piece, and each location has about three names, as well. Yes, there's an index in the back of the book, but after a while it got annoying to have to keep flipping back there for the hundredth time to figure out who or what something was. I know I'm bad with names, but when they're Elvish names, forget it, I don't have a chance remembering who anyone is.

I think on future rereads I'll be able to appreciate the book better and catch more of who everyone is, but this first time around it only earned 3 1/2 stars out of 5. I am glad I finally read it, though; I felt like such a lousy Tolkien fan, being a fan for twenty years and never having read this. The story does give you lots of information about Middle Earth and characters that show up in the trilogy (as well as a little bit at the end about what happens in said trilogy), so that was really what made me enjoy it at all. Still, I much prefer the trilogy and The Hobbit, but now I feel justified in saying that since I gave this one a chance. ;)

The other book I finished recently was Magic Tails.

Let's just say this was definitely a good choice after something heavy like The Silmarillion! Magic Tails is an anthology of short stories all about cats; my friend lent it to me because she knows how much I love fantasy and cats and figured I'd like it, which I did. Some of the stories were better than others, but that's to be expected when a book is a collection by different authors. There were two stories in here that were retellings of Sleeping Beauty told through a cat's eyes, and I think those two, as well as the story called "Pharaoh's Cat" (I'm a big fan of ancient Egypt- I even took a class on it in college) were my favorites.

I really enjoyed this book and I'll recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy and cats. I'll give this 4 1/2 stars out of 5; it probably deserves a bit lower than that since it's not like this was epic fantasy or anything, but it was just so much fun to read that it gets a high score from me. :)

Week two of the EAST Harvest Treasure Hunt

Yup, it's week two of the EAST (EarthPath Artisans Street Team) Harvest Treasure Hunt!

The winner from last week won this bracelet. Who knows which of the prizes will be for this week- it could be mine. ;) (The prizes are randomly picked each week, and at the end of the hunt in November one person will win a prize basket with lots of stuff!)

Just go to the team blog to read the rules on how to participate and to see what all the pretty prizes are. It's easy- basically all you have to do is find the key phrases in Autumn-themed items in the participating team member shops, then reply to the team blog saying where you found five of them.

Good luck!
