Trove Thursday- Happy New Year!

Happy new year, everyone! Sorry for the lack of updates recently; I've been busy with family things and not feeling up do doing much. Mostly I've just been curled up with the new Zelda DS game I got for Christmas- it's so much fun! My updates may be sporadic for a bit longer, though; I'm stopping my meds tomorrow, so I'm predicting feeling pretty lousy (well, lousier than usual; since I've been decreasing, I've been feeling generally icky for a while) for at least a few weeks. Here's to hoping I start to feel better sooner, though! I have so many ideas for things I want to make- I just have to feel up to doing them.

Anyway, this is a Trove Thursday post, and I was able to get a treasury this morning for it. :) The Trove theme is Stand Out at the Party, and is filled with pretty things to wear.
Treasury 12/31
If you're viewing this post before 9:15pm Saturday (the 2nd) night, you can find the treasury by clicking here. If you're reading this after that, click the image to go to the flickr page then click "all sizes" above the image, and it'll take you to a bigger version. The "Alternates" are the ones that the curator of the treasury picks that don't show up for anyone else (at least not until they're switched in), so you get a top secret peek at them here. ;)

And to make them easier to find, here are the links to them:

1.) "Medal, gold and black Venetian style mask" by ladyinthetower.
2.) "New Years Black Gold Crochet Bracelet" by CrochetHooked.
3.) "Gold Glitter Pixie Body and Hair Gel" by BerkanasGarden.
4.) "Black is still the new Black med large" by mtcoffinz. (Alternate)
5.) "Silver Venetian mask with shells, Oceania" by ladyinthetower.
6.) "Celebrate - Leather Pouch" by EvesOriginals.
7.) "Antique Silver Genuine Vintage Aqua Teal AB Glass Cabochon Gothic Lolita Steampunk Earrings" by LondonsGate.
8.) "Magic Party Earrings" by Danagonia. (Alternate)
9.) "Azalean Princess Mask in Crimson Red and Glittering Gold" by artisanmaskers.
10.) "KARA- New Year's Kiss Scarf Kir Royale Red" by smittenkittenorig.
11.) "Ruby Tuesday - Earrings Ruby Red Glass Murano Beads, Antique Brass Chadeliers" by CrystalImpressions.
12.) "Celebrate - beaded Necklace" by wiresNpliers. (Alternate)
13.) "OOAK handmade masquerade mardi gras mask irridescent pink and purple princess mask beautiful Halloween costume" by PixieStixx.
14.) "Amethyst, Ruby, Peridot and Morganite Earrings on Vermeil Hooks - Bouquet" by BrokenTeepeeDesigns.
15.) "Confetti wire wrapped Ring 14 karat Rose Gold-filled Ruby Amethyst Turqoise" by CrysallisCreations.
16.) "Hayley Earrings . Cascading Gemstones" by vickiorion. (Alternate)

And speaking of treasuries, I was honored to find my Hobbiton tree earring in this Arboretum-themed treasury. Thanks for including me, CelestialAxis! :D

Merry Christmas!

(That's my sis holding Clara; I had to take the picture.)

Merry Christmas, Blessed Yule, Happy Hogswatch, and Happy Holidays! I hope you all have a wonderful holiday filled with family, good food, laughter, and, yes, cats in silly hats (because that's a good cause of laughter, of course!).

Picspam- some holiday cuteness and silliness

First, the required holiday silly video thing. Yeah, you probably know what it is, and yes, it's full of fuzzbutts. ;)
Send your own ElfYourself eCards

I love that the hat is hovering over Clara's ears. XD

And now, pictures! And lots of cookies.
My sister yelled "Wait! Don't eat that yet!" when I grabbed this cookie:

I'm glad she stopped me because I wouldn't have appreciated the accidental cuteness of a heart-shaped cookie had I just gobbled it up. So instead I grabbed my phone and took a picture (which is funny because my sister told me she had done the same thing). And yes, it was yummy. ;)

And now two more random cookie pictures:

Yup, my sister and I made green leaves. And no one is surprised. ;)

What do you mean, Triforces, smiley faces, swirls and hearts aren't Christmas-y? Come on, you know if you give me icing of some sort you're going to end up with weird cookies. ;) (I did make some trees and stars, if that helps.)

I don't think I shared these pictures yet:

My sister bought tshirts for the two dogs (I don't seem to have a picture of them in the shirts yet, though) and ended up with an extra one. Since my cat is about the size of the dogs (she actually outweighs them by a few pounds, my pudgy cat), we decided to stick one on her. As you can remember, Clara is a total sweetheart and puts up with my silliness, so all she did was flop over a few times because the shirt felt weird.
(On an unrelated note, see that fencing? We have to have that up so the impish puppy doesn't try to walk across the part where the railing is.)

Back to the cat- I can't blame her, though; apparently cats don't have shoulders like dogs do, so her shirt kept sliding down. I'm sure all the rolling didn't help:

Roll, roll, roll.

Eventually she realized rolling wouldn't get it off her, so she resorted to staring at me:

"Come on, Mommy, get this dumb thing off me. Please?"

When that didn't work, she figured if you can't beat 'em, join 'em:

Yup, she decided to pretend to be a dog. For the first time ever she started playing with a ball (she never played with the jingly cat ones, but she'll bat around a dog drool toy?).

This only lasted a second, though, until the lazy cat batted it out of reach.

Then she wandered away, but I managed to snap a picture of her back where the words are, finally! I think the impish dog has a "Just how good do I have to be?" shirt and the good dog has something like "Christmas princess" on hers. Spoiled Clara got "Santa's favorite", which is apt. Judging from her girth, Santa has been feeding her cookies, too.

I have a short Christmas post ready to go up tomorrow, so I'll just say Happy Christmas Eve! I get to spend today with my fiancé's family and tomorrow with mine. :)

Talented Tuesday- Carapace

Alas, I keep not getting these posts done in time for Tuesdays. But no fear- this one is on time! This interview is with another of my FAE (Fantasy Artists of Etsy) friends, Carapace. She makes the most vivid and bright paintings (err... drawings? They're pretty pictures, even if I don't know the medium) and sculptures, and is such a fun person (I loved reading her answers). I also love that when she sent me the answers she told me "I'm afraid I got geek on your questions". LOL! See, no wonder I think she rocks. ;)

What's your name?
Carapace!
Look, that's all you're gettin' here. have to maintain my whole woman-of-mystery aura. It's not easy, when there's not any actual mystery.

Where can you be found on the internet?
I have a somewhat-updated blog on
www.caramakes.blogspot.com
and of course my Etsy shop at
http://carapace.etsy.com

I'm also on Ning, though I still don't really understand it. And technically Squidoo, I guess. But Etsy and my blog are the sites I actually maintain.

Describe yourself in five words.
Physically and psychologically incapable of such brevity.

If you were a color, what would you be?
Green, no doubt. But I fear I would be a nasty avocado green, when what I really want is a scintillating emerald green or a bright vivid banana-leaf green. Man, banana-leaves are fantastic. They look like they've been painted with a palette knife on board.

If you were a "Dungeons and Dragons"/fantasy character or creature, what would you be? (Can be a specific character, or something general like "elven bard", "centaur", etc).
I reject your limiting concepts of alignment and class! D&D is number-slaved system built to glorify Demon Dice at the expense of true character creation!
Now, Castle Falkenstein, that's a game for proper gentlefolk! And I am a green Cait Sith, thank you. With Exceptional glamour.
I find it hilarious that you thought you might overgeek me with that question, you know.

If you could live anywhere (or anywhen), where/when would it be?
I hope to live in the future. The far future, even. Just in my lifetime, the world has changed in amazing and wonderful ways; I really want to see what happens next.

The great thing is, all I have to do to achieve this is not die. I was already pretty intent on not dying. It would really cramp my plans.

What is your greatest dream or goal?
My greatest dream is this one where I have wings, but the world is underwater, and there's a central power algorithm that allows everyone to keep living in this situation, but--

Ah, you probably don't mean that kind of dream. Shame, that one's fantastic.

My fondest daydream is to become well known enough to have dedicated patrons, people waiting to pay me huge absurd amounts of money for whatever I turn out, so I can afford to do nothing but paint and draw and sketch all day. To any patrons thinking now of acquiring an artist, I assure you, I can be bought!

My big goal is to actually get a comic series going that makes enough money for me to live in the style to which I have become accustomed-- that is, artistic shanty dweller-- and gets enough attention to keep me satisfied. I'm working on it!

What was your very first piece of art? How long have you been an artist?
My first piece of art, as far as I can tell, was a mural of birds flying into the sunset behind sharp mountains. Or, as my mother would tell you, a bunch of Ms drawn all over the wall of our house with a crayon. My mother, being wonderful, assumed I had a reason, and instead of removing all marking implements from the house bought me enough paper to keep me off the walls.

I don't think people can choose to not be artists. It's built into our species. We see things that aren't there and try to make them exist. Some people do it in a useful form, and make bread and bikes and solar powered office buildings. And some people draw pictures of women with bike wheels for legs. But it's all art.

If you sell your art, how did you get started?
As with most things artistic, the genesis lay in boredom. I was helping a friend run a table at a convention, business was sloooow, and I started offering sketches just as a way to pass time. Someone tipped me, I started charging, and I've pretty well kept charging since.

What is the strangest thing you've ever made?
In my maskmaking days, I overcooked a clay mask. It's...disturbing, and inadvertently far more artistic than I'd intended. I wanted a basic face form, I got Echoes of The Future Holocaust. I keep it away in a shoebox where it can't watch me.

Pick your favorite project/artwork- what is it and what inspired you on it? If you'd like to share, tell a little about the process you used from inspiration to completion of that project.
I guess my favorite project is actually comicking. Comickery? I like making comics. My comics start with a rough idea for a story, usually with one central image. Then I try to line up a page or two in my head, thinking about what needs to happen for each panel and in longer stories, each page. This is the longest part of the process, and to outsiders it no doubt looks like I'm just staring into space and making a weird face. Not so! I am thinking! But that's not obvious until I start drawing layouts, and making really really weird faces, because I'm basically acting out each position and expression as it comes up on the page, and my hands are busy. Then I have to try and make my layout sketch legible, with all the manual dexterity that implies. Then, halfway through the inking and coloring, my hand cramps up, and I have to go do something else, and when I come back it's all completely wrong, so I redraw the whole page and three more besides, and then it rocks, and I cackle and run around insisting all my friends and family look at my awesome new creation.

Every picture I draw is like that, actually, since I do try to tell a story in everything. Comics are just a little more pronounced about it, and give me more room to play.

What kind of advice would you give to other artists?
Save your computer files, wash your paintbrushes right after use, and never let the cat near your artwork. Ever. Oh man. Trust me on this one.
Oh, and acquire a supportive housemate, who will understand that sometimes there will be paint in the drinking glasses, and clay in the carpet, and feed you regardless. That one's really important.

What is your favorite:
Color?
Green! To a worrying and obsessive degree. It's gotten to the point where I have to make a Will Check to even use soap that isn't green.
Quote?
"I reject your reality, and substitute my own."
Not really that big a fan of Mythbusters, even, but that line is just perfect for every occasion.
Book?
Momo, by Michael Ende. There aren't many works of anything that I can say with confidence changed my life, but Momo certainly did. I don't think I'd have taken half the risks or been nearly so regret-free if I hadn't run into that book when I was a tyke. I reread it every couple of years and it always centers me.
Character? (book or whatever)
Moist Von Lipwig, from the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett. A schemer and con man, but mediated by a total lack of malice, and currently in the process of becoming something more valuable. I like that in a character.
TV show and/or movie?
The original Star Trek is endlessly glorious. Not always good, mind you, but glorious. I can just put that series in the DVD player and let it go all day. The latest revamp movie is pretty awesome too.
Oh, and of course it helps that Star Trek got more than twelve episodes. No, I'm not bitter about Firefly, why do you ask?
Season?
Summer, all nine months of it! I love waking up and knowing what the weather will be like.
Food?
Fajitas! With lots and lots of peppers and onions, all caramelized by the hot pan. Mmmmm....
Animal?
Octopi. They're smart, they're shapeshifters, AND they have chromatophores. Humans fly, swim, and open jars, but we do not have chromatophores. I envy the octopus.
Art medium and/or supply?
It has taken me a lifelong journey and I suspect I'll always have many loves, but I have at last discovered my perfect partner in the form of a Cintiq tablet with Painter software. Even the immediacy of pencil and paper can't compete with the magic potential of endless undo.

And that's it for this week's Talented Tuesday. Thanks for answering my silly questions, Cara, and for actually out-dorking me. That's a rare skill. ;)

Art update- LotR-inspired earrings and fantasy ears

First, here's a picture of all the snow we got after it finally stopped falling from the sky:
Snow- finally stopped falling!
I think we got about 2 feet of the white stuff. Okay, that's enough winter for me. Can we switch over to summer now? ...what do you mean today is the first day of winter? But it's been cold for two months! Sigh. I really need to move someplace warmer so I can have year-round summer, or at least be somewhere where cold (ie- anything under 65 degrees) doesn't last longer than warm.

Anyway, on to the real point of this entry- art! I've been largely working on presents so I can't share those, but I have done a few things, mostly custom orders, over the past two weeks or so.
First, the next three earrings inspired by The Lord of the Rings. Keep in mind that these are not at all canon and are just my interpretations of them. :) What can I say, LotR inspires me.
Red, Green, and Silver Cartilage Chain Earring - Realm of the Horse Lords

"Red, Green, and Silver Cartilage Chain Earring - Realm of the Horse Lords" (Rohan) - here on Etsy and here on Artfire.

Earthy Green, Brown and Yellow Cartilage Chain Earring - The Party Tree

"Earthy Green, Brown and Yellow Cartilage Chain Earring- The Party Tree" (The Shire) - here on Etsy and here on Artfire.

Green, Blue and Silver Butterfly Cartilage Chain Earring - Imladris

"Green, Blue and Silver Butterfly Cartilage Chain Earring - Imladris" (Rivendell) - here on Etsy and here on Artfire.

Next is another cartilage earring; this one was a custom order for someone who wanted this one, but with three lobe piercings. I've never done a double chain earring with more than two posts, so I'm very glad the idea I had for it worked! :D
Sea Blue and Green Double Cartilage Chain Earring with multiple posts

I also had two custom orders for ears this month. Pardon the not very good photos; in the middle of very cold and snowy weather, I wasn't about to go outside to get pictures.
Green Elf Ears (Yoda)

First, a pair of crocheted green elf ears- she wanted them for a Yoda costume. :) They're on a matching green headband.

Small Gnome Ears

These are kid-sized gnome ears (hence why they look so high up on the mannequin head; the head is too big for the ears) on a blond headband. These are going to go with a gnome costume for a two year old; how cute is that! :)

Virtual gifts, please? (Oh, and happy Yule!)

First I want to wish a happy Yule and winter solstice to all those who celebrate it. :D

I saw this on one of my friends' livejournal blogs and couldn't resist snagging one for me, too. ;) Anyone want to leave me a silly virtual gift?

If you make one, let me know the link to it and I'll leave you a silly gift (probably a Lite Brite, lol) in return. ;)

I promise an actual art post soon, then some more holiday silliness. Yay, holidays!

Trove... Saturday- Winter Wonderland

I'm all sorts of thrown off my posting schedule; Saturday is close to Thursday, right? This Trove post is inspired by the fact that, oh boy do we have snow today. You know that big storm that hit most of the east coast? Yeah, it definitely hit the east coast.
Snow 2

And it's not supposed to stop until tomorrow morning; I think they're predicting up to 2 feet of snow. Am I the only one longing for summer?

Anyway, onto the Winter Wonderland Trove, for those of you who happen to like this white stuff. ;)

1.) "Snow Crystals Wall Quilt" by threadsofmagique.
2.) "winter fairy blue ice Hair falls" by SistersOfTheMoon.
3.) "Icy Blue, Cobalt and Lavender Butterfly - A Filigree Sculpted Leather Mask" by beadmask.
4.) "Snowflake . fairy fantasy art 5x7 print" by aquariann.
5.) "Ellyllons Faerie Wings" by blupixie.
6.) "Pegasus and the Unicorn High Quality 5x7 Art Print" by delarenaissance.
7.) "White Fairy Cat Locket with Charms-- Snowflake Fairytail" by SpellboundWings.
8.) "Winter Oak" by Carapace.
9.) "GLASS TILE PENDANT - ICE DRAGON" by flyttamouse.

Edit: And woah, I just snagged a treasury on Etsy! I put all these items in it, either as mains or alternates, and added a few more awesome fantasy icy and snowy things in blues and purples. :) You can find it here until the Monday the 21st at 10:30pm.

Here's a screencap in case you're reading this after Monday night:
A Fantastical Winter Wonderland

To view it larger (so you can see all the usernames), click here. The usernames are in grey under the art- to find the shops, type the username then ".etsy.com" (minus the quotes) in your browser's address bar. For example, the first one would be threadsofmagique.etsy.com.

Another random post filled with puppies

I've been feeling really crummy lately, so I haven't gotten a Talented Tuesday post ready to go yet. I may get it done today or tomorrow, but I'm not sure. Luckily I had a random picspam post in "draft" mode since September (I kinda forgot about it), and I added a few more photos to it. The first photos were taken months ago and the last few are recent; I apologize for the poor quality ones- those were taken with my phone. And hey, puppies make me feel better, right?

First, my fiancé getting dogpiled by Chloe and Daisy:
Dogpile! Puppies love Josh Dogpile! Puppies love Josh

Puppies love Josh!

Belly rubs!

Of course, the kitty couldn't be left out, either. This is Clara in the middle of a "kitty flop" (that's what we call it when she falls over on her side for tummy rubs).

"Can I have a bite? Can I have a bite?" (This is Daisy doing her usual thing; annoying her big sister while poor Chloe just wants to eat a bone.)

Have I mentioned that Daisy is a fearless little imp? This is her kind of play:

Yup, she's hanging by her teeth far above the ground; you can't see it, but my sister was swinging her back and forth. It was hilarious!

Except Chloe jumped up and grabbed her, and they both came tumbling down:

This was even funnier. If only I'd had my camera handy instead of my phone; I would have recorded it. ;)

And now for some newer pictures- these were right after Daisy got back from the groomer so she has cute little bows in her pigtails/ears:
Photobucket Photobucket

Chloe never moved but Daisy was all "What's that?" because she's ADD dog.

Photobucket

"Hey you kids! Get off my lawn!"

Eep, and I have even more I want to photodump (including awesome stuff I bought/traded for recently), but that'll go up later. :) Hopefully you guys don't mind random pictures of the fuzzbutts who live with me.

Art update- Pokemon and a faerie (dolls, I mean)

Here's the post I hinted at in my last art update. :)

These are the two Pokemon I made for one of my POEST street team teammates:
Jigglypuff and Togepi Plushies

Togepi Plushie

Jigglypuff Plushie

Yup, Togepi and Jigglypuff. I think these came out so cute that I'm going to make some for me after the holidays (my Jiggly is going to get a silly hat like in the Smash Bros game, though). Josh helped me with the felt (I'm not good at small fiddly bits like that- thanks, Josh!), but I glued them on and crocheted and painted everything. The only downside is that I crochet *extremely* tightly, so the dolls came out slightly smaller than the pattern calls for; because of that, Togepi's spots are bigger than they should be. Still, they're friggin' adorable, and I love getting to make cute things. :)

The other plushie I finished lately that I can share (that's the thing about making Christmas presents; I can't share them until after the holidays!) is this faerie because my friend already got it:
Ruthie's purple fairy doll

I made this for my best online friend and elf-sister, Ruthie, who has an obsession with purple and who loves fantasy. ;)

You can't see it too well, but there are black dots all over the doll's wings. The back of the wings have a heart and star design, too. The skintone came out a bit oddly in the photo, though. The wing also looks a bit wonky, but that's just the way the pipecleaner in it is bent.

The faerie doesn't have a name yet, but as soon as Ruthie picks one I'll change the description on flickr with what it is. :) I'm just happy this doll made Ruthie smile because she's been having a bad week. *sends along lots of hugs!*

Trove Thursday- Fantastical Holiday Ornaments

Trove Thursday time! I was originally going to make a random fantasy holiday Trove (maybe next week) but I kept finding all these pretty ornaments, so I decided to devote it to just the ornaments I found on Etsy and Artfire. :) Now I'm just hoping the byhand.me site continues to work so this shows up; the site has been down a lot this month.

Here's the Fantastical Holiday Ornaments Trove:

1.) "Hollyberry (ooak, art doll, pixi)" by ToadstoolsNTreestump.
2.) "Christmas Fairy Door Ornament" by HiddenWorlds.
3.) "Victorian Mermaid Sisters Glass Ornament" by mermaidencreations.
4.) "Fairy Gourd Ornament Holiday Christmas Fantasy Woodburned Pyrography Folk Art" by Lynndart.
5.) "Lace Fairy Ornament Gaia Earth" by ViridianMuse.
6.) "The legendary dragon named Dwyer" by ALittleCharacter.
7.) "Red and Green Jingle Gnome" by Fyrecreek.
8.) "Mermaid Eggshell Ornament" by ThornTree.
9.) "Butterfly Fantasy Hand Painted Collectible Ornament" by lisianblue.

Art update- jewelry and some related LotR dorkiness

Man, how do I keep falling behind with these art posts? I have so much stuff I want to share that I'm going to move the plushies I just finished to their own post, probably for Friday. They deserve their own post and not get lost in the jumble of jewelry.

Yup, this is a jumble of jewelry (I like that term!) post today. ;) To start, I listed this necklace this week. This is one I had made in the summer, but completely forgot about:
Floral Ba-Gua Octagon Beaded Hemp Necklace or Anklet

Floral Ba-Gua Octagon Beaded Hemp Necklace- it's in my Artfire shop here and my Etsy shop here.
One of my Plurk friends gave me the name for that; I had no idea the discs had significance. I love learning new things like that! I haven't made any necklaces in a few months, so after the holidays I'll work on more. I'd also like to start doing more with hemp than just crocheting it; I'm going to try to get a book out of the library on it or see if I can get a book for Christmas.

And now for the motherload of earrings; I think these spawn while I'm not looking. ;)

These two are custom orders I made this week:
Blue and Silver Girly Gamer Cartilage Chain Earring

Yup, a dice earring- wee, geekiness! I'll have to make more of these (right now I just have a pink one in my shop) because hey, I love dice. ;) These beads are weird because the 1 dot is on a different side (they were made wrong), but they're still cute. I'm tempted to start making other sided dice out of clay, though.

Red and Silver Celtic Heart Double Cartilage Chain Earring

I've never done one in just a silver chain before but I really love how this came out (and I don't even like red!). I'll have to remember how striking the silver color looks when I make more earrings. ;)

And now a bunch of random earrings; I'm not linking to them individually (there's just too many!) but you can find them in my Etsy shop and Artfire shop.
Purple, Blue and Silver Cartilage Chain Earring

Red and Black Double Cartilage Chain Earring

Hot Pink and Black Double Cartilage Chain Earring
Hot Pink and Black Double Cartilage Chain Earring
(This one was inspired by my sister with her obsession with hot pink, black, and zebra print. I'm going to make her something like this for Christmas.)

Black and Silver Moon and Sun Cartilage Chain Earring

(This one is cool because there's a moon on the other side of the sun bead.)

Ice Crystals Blue and Purple Cartilage Chain Earring
Ice Crystals Blue and Purple Cartilage Chain Earring

And last but not least:
Green and Black Leaf Cartilage Chain Earring - Leaves of the Woodland
Green and Black Leaf Cartilage Chain Earring - Leaves of the Woodland

This one is special because it's the start of a series of wonderfully dorky earrings- they're inspired by Lord of the Rings. This one is Mirkwood; I'll likely do another related one later to represent Eryn Lasgalen after the forest was cleansed. (Of course I had to start with my home forest for this series of earrings!) I'm hoping to list the next of those today; so far I have ones for Rivendell, The Shire, and Rohan made up, but I have ideas for Gondor and Lothlórien, too.

These aren't exactly canon, I guess; they're how I interpret the colors and designs of the locations- for example, I made Mirkwood green and black to represent the darkness of the forest, but with silver and light green leaves because there's still beauty in the wood even then.
Heh, I feel like a tour guide: "To your left you'll see some large, very old trees with lovely moss growing down the one side, but be careful not to step... crap, they all got caught in a giant spider web... and now the black squirrels are chewing on their boots. I lose more visitors that way!" Yeah, not a prime location for tourists, but what's an elfling to do? ;)

As I said above, you can find the cartilage chain earrings in my Etsy shop and Artfire shop.

Talented Tuesday- Arlene of Spirit Essence Art

I missed last week (sorry about that, loyal blog readers!), but this week Talented Tuesday is back! This time I'm interviewing my Plurk friend Arlene, a very talented glass artist and painter. :)

What's your name?
Arlene Holtz. Online I am SpiritEssenceArt.

Where can you be found on the internet? (Website, Twitter, shops, blog, etc)
Main Blog: http://www.SpiritEssenceArt.com
Artfire Studio: http://www.SpiritEssenceArt.artfire.com
Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/arlenemh
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/SpiritEssenceArt

Describe yourself in five words.
Creative, multi-faceted, eclectic, friendly, growing

If you were a color, what would you be?
Amethyst Purple

If you were a "Dungeons and Dragons"/fantasy character or creature, what would you be? (Can be a specific character, or something general like "elven bard", "centaur", etc).
I don't know Dungeons and Dragons, but I love reading Science Fiction / Fantasy - Right now am reading Lady of Avalon (a pre-quel to Mists of Avalon) and am loving it! I would say I would be a priestess on Avalon!

If you could live anywhere (or anywhen), where/when would it be?
As for the present time in the here and now, I would have a hard time choosing just one place. I love living near my family in Pittsburgh, and have loved visiting other places in this country and around the world, like San Francisco, San Diego, Australia, New Zealand. There are lots of other places I'd love to visit, but to live??? I am not sure. If I were to choose a time, I think it would be fascinating to live in the times of King Arthur's court / Camelot, or to live in the time of the early Impressionist painters and witness the new ideas and art styles.

What is your greatest dream or goal?
To be publicly recognized as an artist and to be able to bring pleasure and healing to people through my artwork.

What was your very first piece of art? How long have you been an artist?
I don't remember - I have been interested in art as a child, but was discouraged from exploring art early on. I had a piece displayed in grade school in an art show somewhere once and that thrilled me. I gave up art as a young girl, and only picked it up again in my 30's when I started doing pottery (wheel-thrown) and then stained glass. That was over 25+ years ago - which gives my age away!

If you sell your art, how did you get started?
When I started doing stained glass, after a while, people I knew from work or friends would ask me to make them something, and that was how I started being a paid stained glass artist. I went on to doing large window commissions, teaching stained glass, having my own supply and gift shop, doing fused glass, and eventually painting, and selling on the internet and in gift shops.

Pick your favorite project/artwork- what is it and what inspired you on it? If you'd like to share, tell a little about the process you used from inspiration to completion of that project.
My favorite project to date is the set of Angel Messenger Cards that I just finished creating that I am hoping to get published. It took me months to complete and I started out needing to learn some basic skills that I did not have when I first thought of it. This included things like, learning to draw and paint figures and faces, using watercolor as a medium, and coming up with meanings for the different cards. I was inspired to do this because I wanted to combine my love of personal growth and metaphysical / spiritual ideas with art, and the perfect opportunity this will be to help uplift and inspire other people.

What kind of advice would you give to other artists?
My advice would be to follow your heart and don't let others discourage you from doing what makes you happy. It's important to be true to your passions and to believe in yourself, and in those inevitable moments of self-doubt, to turn to friends and companions who will encourage, support, and be positive. None of us need more critics in our lives!
