52 Books in 52 Weeks and other book challenges - 2010

Yup, I'm going to try again this year to get to 52 books, or at least beat my 2009 score of 47 books. I'm going to include in 2010 the Discworld book I started in late December, but everything else I was in the middle of reading, I'll just restart.

To continue from last year, I'm going to use this post to keep track of the books I read for the 52 Books in 52 Weeks challenge group on Ravelry, and edit it when I add, remove, or finish a book. This doesn't just have to be for people on Ravelry, though! If anyone wants to do this, I heartily recommend it. :)

I'm also going to take part in a few other book challenges; I figure I'll be able to do those, too, since I'll be reading them for this challenge anyway. ;)

Challenge Completed! (I'm going to continue keeping track, though.)

----------------------------------------------------------------

More info on this challenge can be found here. This runs until 12/31/10.

For this one the levels are:
**Newbie 2 books by J. Austen, 2 re-writes, prequels, sequels, or spoofs (by other authors)
**Lover 4 books by J. Austen, 4 re-writes, prequels, sequels, or spoofs (by other authors)
** Fanatic 6+ books by J. Austen, 5+ re-writes, prequels, sequels, or spoofs (by other authors)

I'm going to aim for "Lover"; I've been meaning to reread all the Austen books anyway. The trick is going to be finding 4 non-Austen books that I actually want to read. (Don't say that zombie one. Ick, no thanks.)

Books read for this challenge:
1.) Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen finished 3/19ish)
2.) Persuasion by Jane Austen (finished 7/19ish)

----------------------------------------------------------------

More info on this challenge can be found here.

This one has a bunch of categories involved, and you have to read 2 books from each category. This runs until 12/31/10.
1. Young Adult: Any book classified as young adult or featuring a teenage protagonist counts for this category.
2. T.B.R.: ** Intended to help reduce the old T.B.R. pile. Books for this category must be already residents of your bookshelves as of 1/11/09.
3. Shiny & New: Bought a book NEW during 2010 from a bookstore, online, or a supermarket? Then it counts for this category. Second-hand books do not count for this one, but, for those on book-buying bans, books bought for you as gifts or won in a giveaway also count!
4. Bad Blogger’s: *** Books in this category, should be ones you’ve picked up purely on the recommendation of another blogger count for this category (any reviews you post should also link to the post that convinced you give the book ago).
*** Bad Bloggers: Is hosted by Chris of Stuff as Dreams are Made on.
5. Charity: Support your local charity shops with this category, by picking up books from one of their shops. Again, for those on book-buying bans, books bought for you as gifts also count, as long as they were bought from a charity shop.
6. New in 2010: This category is for those books newly published in 2010 (whether it be the first time it is has been released, or you had to wait for it to be published in your country, it counts for this one!)
7. Older Than You: Read two books that were published before you were born, whether that be the day before or 100 years prior!
8. Win! Win!: Have a couple of books you need to read for another challenge? Then this is the category to use, as long that is, you don’t break the rules of the other challenge by doing so! ;)
9. Who Are You Again?: This one isn’t just for authors you’ve never read before, this is for those authors you have never even heard of before!
10. Up to You!: The requirements for this category are up to you! Want to challenge yourself to read some graphic novels? A genre outside your comfort zone? Something completely wild and wacky? Then this is the category to you. The only requirement is that you state it in your sign-up post.

This is going to be the trickier challenge because there are so many categories involved; I may have to fudge the "Charity" one because there aren't any charity stores around here (is that a UK term?) so I'll likely read a used book for this one (because it's good to support small used bookstores), and I don't follow many book blogs, so for "Bad Blogger’s" I'll likely read what random friends and family recommend. For the "Up to You!" I may try to read two books in Old or Middle English, but it depends on how good I become at those languages this year, or maybe I'll do books with the main characters are animals.

Books read for this challenge:
Win! Win!
1.) The Fifth Elephant by Terry Pratchett (finished 1/19)
2.) The Woman Who Rides Like a Man by Tamora Pierce (finished 3/4)

Young Adult
1.) Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce (finished 1/26)
2.) In the Hand of the Goddess by Tamora Pierce (finished 3/3)

Older Than You
1.) The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien (finished 2/9)
2.) The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkien (finished 3/3)

Who are you again?
1.) Love's Shadow by Ada Leverson (finished 3/28)
2.) The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan (finished 8/29)

New in 2010
1.) Glimmerglass by Jenna Black (finished 5/21)
2.) Dragons of the Valley by Donita K. Paul (finished 11/17ish)

Shiny and New
1.) Lioness Rampant by Tamora Pierce (finished 7/23)
2.) Sandry's Book- Circle of Magic by Tamora Pierce (finished 7/25ish)

T.B.R
1.) Persuasion by Jane Austen (finished 7/19ish) - actually a reread, but I've been meaning to read it again for years.

----------------------------------------------------------------

I figure since I read so many British authors, this'll be a good challenge for me. :) This runs until 12/31/10 and I think I'm going to go for "Cream Crackered", especially if I read as much Terry Pratchett and Shakespeare as I think I will. ;)

The levels for this one are:
• "Put The Kettle On" – Read 2 Typically British novels.
• "Gordon Bennett" – Read 4 Typically British novels.
• "Bob's Your Uncle" – Read 6 Typically British novels.
• "Cream Crackered" – Read 8 Typically British novels.

Books read for this challenge:
1.) The Fifth Elephant by Terry Pratchett (finished 1/19)
2.) The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien (finished 2/9)
3.) The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkien (finished 3/3)
4.) Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen (finished 3/19ish)
5.) Love's Shadow by Ada Leverson (finished 3/28)
6.) Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett (finished 4/11)
7.) The Two Towers by JRR Tolkien (finished 4/12)
8.) The Truth by Terry Pratchett (finished 4/26)

Challenge completed!

----------------------------------------------------------------

And speaking of Terry Pratchett:

This one I'm also aiming high for- I think last year I read about 20 Discworld books, and I'll continue with the rereads again this year. So yup, I'm aiming for "Death's Apprentice" (appropriate, I guess, since I cosplay Susan, lol). This one runs through 11/30/10 and more info can be found here.

The levels for this are:
1-3 books - Cashier at Ankh-Morpork Mint
4-5 books - Guard of the City Watch
6-8 books - Academic at the Unseen University
9-10 books - Member of Granny Weatherwax's Coven
10-12 books - Death's Apprentice

Books read for this challenge:
1.) The Fifth Elephant by Terry Pratchett (finished 1/19)
2.) Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett (finished 4/11)
3.) The Truth by Terry Pratchett (finished 4/26)
4.) Thief of Time by Terry Pratchett (finished 7/22)
5.) The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett (finished 7/27ish)
6.) Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett (finished 8/2)
7.) The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett (finished 8/4)
8.) A Hat Full of Sky by Terry Pratchett (finished 9/1)
9.) Going Postal by Terry Pratchett (finished 12/12)

----------------------------------------------------------------

And lastly, I couldn't pass on a LotR challenge! This one is a little different and is more of a Read-Along, and runs until April including The Hobbit and the trilogy (thank goodness not The Sil! I'm not ready to tackle that one again yet!). I'm late starting this one, but I should be able to finish The Hobbit in the remaining 2 weeks of January. :)

Here's the schedule:
* January: The Hobbit at A Striped Armchair
* February: The Fellowship of the Ring at The Literary Omnivore
* March: The Two Towers here at Shelf Love
* April: The Return of the King at Just Add Books

Books read for this challenge:
1.) The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien (finished 2/9)
2.) The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkien (finished 3/3)
3.) The Two Towers by JRR Tolkien (finished 4/12)

I can't guarantee that I'll be able to finish all these challenges, but darnit, I'm going to try. I need to start reading and reviewing books more often. :)

Ok...so you are overlapping these right? :)
I'm not quite as accomplished goal wise, but I am keeping track on my sidebar...if I need something to read maybe I'll just peek at your list for an idea :)

Oh...and aside from the zombie spoof...there is also a sea serpent...

lol, yup- I'm not crazy enough to read that many books; the challenges overlap.

That's neat that you're doing something like this, too- I'll have to stop by your blog (rather than just reading the RSS feed like I usually do) to see what you're reading. :)

Ah! Now a sea serpent I can get behind. Those are cool.
