LotR Read-Along- "The Hobbit" Ramblings

I came into the LotR Read-Along late, so I'm still only halfway through the book even though it's the last day of the month and I'm supposed to start FotR tomorrow. Luckily The Hobbit is a quick read, so I should be done in a day or two- and I've read it many times before, of course, so that helps.

My first experience with The Hobbit was when I was about six and my dad read it to me for the first time, complete with different voices for each of the characters. My dad is a huge LotR fan, too, so it's awesome having something we both love. :) The Hobbit is really the LotR book that influenced me the most (and is probably why I have such a huge fear of spiders, lol) and it's the reason I'm obsessed with Mirkwood and use a half-wood elf as my alter-ego.

This month's blog host for the Read-Along supplied us with some questions to answer earlier this month, but I'm only getting to them now because I started so late.

* Where are you in the story? So far, has the book lived up to your expectations (for first-timers)/memories (for rereaders)? What’s surprising or familiar?
I'm about halfway through and up to where Bilbo has escaped from the goblins in the Misty Mountains and has lost a few of his coat buttons in the door. (The chapter "Out of the Frying-Pan into the Fire", if you're curious.) He just saw Balin on watch and is listening to them say how they shouldn't go back in and rescue him. That's kinda surprising- I'd forgotten just how mean the dwarves were to Bilbo for most of the book. No wonder so many elves don't like dwarves. ;)

* Have you been bogged down anywhere in the book?
Nope. I mean, this is a very easy read. The only LotR book I ever got bogged down with was The Silmarillion- to quote my favorite lines for the FotR Rifftrax:
"Ah, he's reading The Silmarillion and trying desperately to pretend he's enjoying it."
"Ughh... 'Fëanor imprisoned the light of the two trees that illuminated Valinor'... oh god, I can't make it through this thing."

Now that was a book to get bogged down with, even for someone who has a degree in English and focused on British Literature. But I'm rambling- onto the next question!

* Let’s talk about the songs…are you skipping over them to get back to the prose? Why or why not?
I'll admit that I used to skip over the songs, but ever since I picked a few songs from this book and the LotR books to memorize for a poetry class in college, I now read through all of them and enjoy them more. :) (Now I'm going through the Gil-Galad poem and the walking songs in my head and trying to see how much I still remember of them...)

* What do you think of the narrator’s voice?
I still hear the book read in my dad's funny voices for the characters, so that probably doesn't help me hear the normal narrator's voice. ;)

* Does your edition have illustrations or maps? Have you been ignoring them or referring back to them?
Just the two little maps in the beginning of the book: one of Smaug's domain and one of the area from Rivendell to the Lonely Mountain. At this point I know what Middle Earth looks like, but I still flip to the maps sometimes because I like following the characters as they move around. :)

* Now it’s time to play favourites! Who’s your favourite main character? Who’s your favourite minor character (i.e.: villains, random helpers, etc.)? What’s your favourite scene? Do you have a favourite quote to share?
For main characters, I've always loved Fili and Kili- I'm not a huge fan of dwarves, but there are some that I just adore (like Cheery in Pratchett's Discworld series- who has also influenced my views on dwarves. Now I wonder if some of Tolkien's dwarves were female, lol), and the two youngest dwarves in The Hobbit are right up there at the top of the "cool dwarf" pile. My dad still makes jokes about Bombur, so I guess he has a special place in my heart, too, but in a different way than the younger dwarves.

For minor characters, this isn't even something I have to think about: I adore Thranduil, even if he does come off as being conceited and... well, mean, in this book (but no wonder, when the dwarves are the main characters of the story...). I've gotta be the only person in the world who has "Greenleaf" in their nickname not because of Legolas, but because I just adore Mirkwood and the Woodland elves (my favorite race in "Dungeons and Dragons"? The Wood Elves. Surprise?), and because "Thranduiliell" was too long (and confusing to spell) a surname. Yes, technically Thranduil is a Sindarin elf rather than Silvan, but by this point in Middle Earth's history, same difference.
(Edit: And it just occurred to me that I may have confused some people here- Thranduil is only called "Elvenking" in this book, so that's who I'm talking about.)

No matter how creepy and dark Mirkwood was at the time of this book, I still love that forest, so you can probably guess that the scenes there are my favorites. So far my favorite quote in the book was at the beginning when Gandalf shows up and starts talking to Bilbo and the hobbit is shooing him off as politely as he can. Gandalf's response is "What a lot of things you do use Good morning for! Now you mean that you want to get rid of me, and that it won't be good till I move off.". That just makes me laugh whenever I read it; when they make this book into a movie, I really hope that keep that line in!

Now I have to go catch up with others in the Read-Along and see what their thoughts are. :)

Createability Team is exposed! ;)

But exposed in a good way, of course! Our team was lucky enough to be part of VickiDianeDesigns' series of treasuries, and I was lucky enough to be included in it! :D It's so cool to be able to see the faces of some of my teammates:

Createability Treasury

If you're viewing this post before Sunday morning (the 31st), you can click here to go straight to the treasury to see it full size. If you're catching this post after that, you can view the screencap full size here. See the names in grey under the picture? Just enter that username then ".etsy.com" (minus the quotes- so I'd be merigreenleaf.etsy.com) after it in your browser's address bar, and you'll be taken to the relevant shop. :)

The treasury has switched around some since I took the screencap, but I think everyone in it is still the same.

Wolf Moon / Old Moon

The regulars in the FAE(Fantasy Artists of Etsy) team thread have decided to do challenges once a month based on the moon. January's theme was "Wolf Moon" or "Old Moon" and we ended up with some lovely items based on both. :) My teammate Julie (Mermaiden) wrote up a cool blog post about why the first moon of the year is called "Old Moon", and a bit about why it's called "Wolf Moon", as well.

Here are the awesome things the FAE team came up with:

"Star Stretch . wolf moon fantasy art magnet" by aquariann

"Wolf Hunter Chain Maille Necklace" by AthenasArmoury

"Snow White Wolves Dance Around the New Old Winter Moon in Blue January Midnight" by Carapace

"Talisman of Minas Ithil Tower of the Moon Stained Glass Pendant" by mermaidencreations

"Mother Moon at Dawn -- OOAK Beaded Fantasy Moon Necklace" by ErtheFae

Personally, I decided that "Wolf Moon" sounded a lot more fun than "Old Moon" (what can I say, I love animals), so I went with that. ;) I already blogged about these ears, but I'll share them again:

I think there may still be some teammates working on wolfy or moony things, so I may add more to this post later. :)

Trove Thursday- Love in Fairyland

Before I post this week's trove, I wanted to share that one of my FAE teammates is having a giveaway for a lovely pair of earrings on her blog, so go check it out and enter to win!

Now onto the trove! Once again I decided to cheat and not come up with my own theme, so I'm going to use the BlogFire guild's Valentine's-themed carnival. How could I resist, when I found such lovely pink and red fantasy-ish things on Artfire? ;) This week's Trove is Love in Fairyland.

1.) "Queen of Hearts 5x7 Fine Art Print" by twosilverstars.
2.) "Red & Pink Mix Swarovski Crystals Chandelier Earrings-Carmen" by Pinkymonkey.
3.) "Sweetheart Valentine Blessing Fairy with Heart Wand" by NushkieDesign.
4.) "Pink Opal Dangle Earrings" by JewelledTrellis.
5.) "Angel Hearts Fine Art Print 5x7" by SpellboundWings.
6.) "SEA OF ROSES Altered Art Domino Pendant Selina Fenech" by shesthatgirl.
7.) "Queen of Hearts Fantasy Necklace" by Swank.
8.) "Freshly Caught Faeries - Ruby Red Suncatcher" by GypsyTradingCompany.
9.) "Blaze Red and Dark Silver Glass Bead Dangle Choker Necklace" by TwilightsFancy.

Although in hindsight, maybe I should have put off this Trove for another week or two since it's still two weeks until Valentine's Day and I'm running out of related Trove ideas. LOL! Ah well, I'll think of something for next week, I promise.

Book review- Alanna: The First Adventure

I'm on a writing kick, apparently; I just updated (well, my character did) my group's D&D blog and Cyn's blog, and now it's time for a book review. This time I'm reviewing Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce.

The Tortall books by Tamora Pierce are a young adult fantasy series; if you've never read a Tortall book, this is the best one to start with because it's the very first in the series. I wish I had found these when I was a teen, but they're very enjoyable to read if you're an adult, too. :) Oddly enough, even though this is the first of the Tortall books and I've read almost all of them, I don't think I've ever read this particular story arc.

Alanna: The First Adventure is no exception to the enjoyable read rule; it's a fun, fast read and definitely leaves you wanting to get onto the next one. The story involves the heroine Alanna disguising herself as a boy in order to become a page while her twin brother goes off to become a sorcerer; her goal is to become a female knight, but women aren't allowed to be knights. Fortunately this plan (mostly) works out, but I won't give away what happens. I love all the character development and growth Alanna goes through as the book goes on, as she becomes more comfortable in her own skin and begins to see that she's just as good as the male pages. (What can I say, I'm a sucker for strong female characters.) Like all the books in the series, the characters are wonderfully written; I always grow attached to Pierce's characters, and this time was no different.

The only slightly bad thing I can say about the book is that it reads a lot more like a children's book than the later Tortall books; maybe this wouldn't have been so obvious, but I read one of the later books recently. This isn't bad, really, but it's just something I noticed as I was reading. It seemed the most obvious at the start of the book where everything works out a little too pat and perfect when things could have gone wrong at any point. Still, I guess it's not too hard to pass as a boy when you're an eleven year old tomboy (as someone who was a tomboy teen, I can relate), so the fact that Alanna's plan fooled people isn't too strange.

I also noticed a lot of typos in my copy of the book (mostly quotation marks that were missing), but this is more something an editor should have caught or something messed up as it was being printed than a writing or story problem. I'm probably overly nitpicky about this kind of thing, though.

Overall, this was a fun read and I really like Alanna. I think I'll give this book 4 stars out of 5; if the next book in the story arc is as good as the second part of this book, then I have a feeling that one will get at least a 4 1/2. :)

Art update: jewelry, a dragon scarf, and wolf ears

Whoops! Had this post saved and ready to be posted, but then forgot to make it go live. So this is a bit behind, but it's some of the stuff I've finished lately. :)

First some jewelry:
Jewelry for my Mommom

These aren't really new, but I hadn't blogged them yet; I made these earrings and bracelet for my grandmother for Christmas and her birthday (her birthday was two days after Christmas). The picture doesn't do them justice because the earrings and bracelet are really cute!

I tried to make the earrings in colors that are kinda Christmas-y, but could be worn year-round. I made the bracelet to kinda match the earrings and the anklet I had made her before. The round beads are ones that I got from an old thrift store necklace that I took apart (well, my friend had gotten the old jewelry, then gave it to me), and the other beads were matching glass ones I had in my stash. :) It's on an elastic cord so it's easy for my Mommom to take on and off.

My first knotted hemp bracelet!

I don't think I shared this one yet- this bracelet is my first finished knotted hemp thing (I practiced first on some random cord to learn some knots). I think it came out pretty well. :)

Butterfly Cartilage Chain Earrings

These were a custom order for one of my very favorite customers. :D Basically it's the Imladris earring in my shop, but with a matching lobe earring and a cuff on top.

I really have to find more of these butterfly charms- I've only got one left, but I can't find ones this cute. :( So if anyone knows where I can find these exact butterflies, please let me know!

Edit: And as I was posting this, I just got a package from my awesome friend Luthien with a whole bunch of the butterflies in it! *lots and lots of hugs!* Thank you so much, Luthien!

The other things I've finished lately were crochet:
Green Dragon Scarf
Green Dragon Scarf - Sneaking up on you!

I made this dragon scarf for a Crochet-Along on Ravelry; the pattern was designed by crochetqueen. We're allowed to sell what we make from this pattern (as long as we credit the designer), so I want to add these to my shop. :)

I wanted to use yellow-green yarn coming out of its nose to represent the chlorine gas that green dragons breathe (yup, I'm a D&D player, so accuracy is important, lol), but the only fluffy green yarn I had was this light green stuff. I joked that it looks like snot. ;) Everything on this dragon is yarn, even the eyes (I crocheted those, too. I was going to use felt, but it wouldn't stay glued on).

Overall, I love how this guy came out! :D Next time I'm going to make one longer (I prefer really long scarves), and maybe make the snout longer. And maybe come up with some wings and horns? Generally I put horns on dragons.

And the other thing I finished lately are these wolf ears:
Wolf Ears
Wolf Ears - bent

They're in my Etsy shop here and my Artfire shop here. I made them for the "Wolf Moon" challenge the FAEteam is doing this month, but they'd also work as dog or cat ears.

They're crocheted from acrylic yarn and fun fur yarn. The headband is white, the center of the ears are grey yarn, and the outside of the ears are also grey, but with fun fur that shifts from white to grey to an almost-black, so they don't quite match (I figured that's fine since animals tend to have mottled fur). There are pipecleaners crocheted into the outside of the ear, so they can be bent in pretty much any direction, like you can see in the bottom picture. Well, kinda see. It was really hard for the bent part to show up in the photo when the lighting was terrible; can it be spring yet? I miss being able to take good outdoor photos.

Can you guys go vote on a challenge?

Just a quick post- can I get you guys to go vote for your favorite on the Valentines Challenge over at the Artfire Artisan Jeweler blog?

You don't have to vote for me, just your favorite. You vote just by replying to the post over there.

If you're curious about mine, though, I submitted my Queen of Hearts cartilage chain earring for the challenge:

Thanks, guys! :)

Trove Thursday- Fiber Arts Cuties (Knitted and Crocheted Fantasy Dolls)

I wasn't sure what I wanted to do for the BlogFire guild's "Wow Items: Knitting and Crochet" blog carnival; I love crochet so much that I definitely wanted to jump on, but I didn't want to just share what I do. Then I realized "Hey, it's Thursday!", so the answer was clear; make a Trove post showing off crocheted and knitted items from fellow artists. Of course I chose fantasy dolls as my theme, since I have a thing for cute dolls. ;)

So here's the Fiber Arts Cuties Trove:

1.) "Legend of Zelda - Link Crochet Doll" by deadcraft.
2.) "Knitted Zelda Fairy Plush - Purple" by oishiiocha.
3.) "Knitted Pixie" by woolies.
4.) "Mermaid Bookmark Pattern PDF file" by AndersonsCreations.
5.) "Knitted gnome, dwarf, elf, weird, magical, fantasy, strange-small size" by oritdotandolls.
6.) "Kitsune Fox amigurumi pattern" by skyfirearts.
7.) "Amigurumi Elf - Crochet Pattern PDF" by madsbear.
8.) "Crochet Dragon" by redoakcrafts.
9.) "Mermaid Crochet Pattern" by anapaulaoli.

And I want to thank my good friend Ruthie for mentioning me and my dolls in her BlogFire post- *lots of hugs!* Blaecwen says she's honored to have her picture up there. :D

Book review- The Fifth Elephant

After months of procrastinating, I'm going to try really hard to post book reviews whenever I finish a book this year. I guess it's a resolution? The first book I'm reviewing this year is The Fifth Elephant by Terry Pratchett.

Yup, another Discworld one (what? I love these books). This is 24th in the Discworld series and is the 5th City Watch book, so needless to say, if you're new to Discworld, don't start here. I'd say to begin at the beginning with The Colour of Magic or if you're interested in just the Watch books, start with Guards! Guards!. To post my usual Discworld summary from the Wiki page, Discworld is a comedic fantasy book series by the British author Terry Pratchett, set on the Discworld, a flat world balanced on the backs of four elephants which, in turn, stand on the back of a giant turtle, Great A'Tuin. The books frequently parody, or at least take inspiration from, J. R. R. Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, H. P. Lovecraft and William Shakespeare, as well as mythology, folklore and fairy tales, often using them for satirical parallels with current cultural, political and scientific issues.

And now that that's out of the way, onto some ramblings about this book. For a quick bit about the plot (I don't like to give much away in my reviews, so I'll try to keep this simple), this book largely takes place in Überwald but, since it's a Watch book, also has scenes in Ankh-Morpork. The story starts with the theft of the replica Scone of Stone (the dwarven king sits on a lump of dwarf bread. Yum?) and the main plot involves Sam Vimes (Commander of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch who is also a duke, as much as he doesn't like that), the troll Detritus and the dwarf Cheery investigating that in Überwald, where the real Scone was also stolen. Überwald is not a good place to be, what with vampires, werewolves, and strange dwarves (which I think Pratchett spells "dwarfs", but that spelling looks wrong to me, lol), and Igors, of course, but those are the good guys in the strangeness of that country. Oh, and I should mention that a lot of those werewolves are related to Angua, so she and Carrot (as well as Gaspode, the talking mutt) are thrown into this mess, as well. During all this, it's gotten rather messy in Ankh-Morpork, too, mainly because with Vimes and Carrot gone, that put the horribly incompetent Sergeant Colon in charge of the Watch. Since it's a Discworld book, things work out in the end, but the chaos getting there is quite enjoyable.

And if you're curious "The Fifth Elephant" refers to the legend that at one time there were five elephants on A'Tuin, but one came crashing to the disc and created fat and ore deposits, which are largely in Überwald.

I know that's not a very interesting summary, but trust me, this book is funny and just as good as the rest of the series. And that's coming from someone who loathes vampires and undead- Pratchett is pretty much the only author who can write those kinda of characters in a book and I'll still want to read it. I'm generally not too keen on dwarves, either, but I have to say that Cheery is one of my favorite Discworld characters; I love that she's herself, even if that means being *gasp!* a female dwarf (generally on the Disc, all dwarves are "he"), and she's so smart (I think she's the entirety of of the Watch forensics unit, or something like that). And speaking of dwarves, I really like Carrot in this book, too (yeah, he's a 6 foot tall human, but he was raised by dwarves, so he's a dwarf). There's just something about a character who is so good-natured, friendly, noble, and honest- that kind of character always appeals to me. He also has pretty much no biases about people, even if they're on four legs; he seems genuinely impressed that Angua's brother is a champion sheepdog, and it doesn't bother him in the least that she's a werewolf. Add to that the fact that he's not as naive as he seems and can be mean when he needs to (as Angua notices "You do know how to do nasty, don't you. But you use it like a claw; it slides out when you need it, and when you don't there's no sign that it's there") shows that there's more to him than you'd originally think.

I think that's one of the reasons why the Discworld books are so good; the characters are just so well-written and interesting. The comedy and wit are other reasons, too, of course. ;) I'll give this 4 1/2 stars out of 5.

Talented Tuesday- Lady Steel of 88Links

I'm all sorts of behind with posting these interviews, but I'm trying to get back on the ball. This week Talented Tuesday features another of my awesome and talented FAEteam (fantasy artists of Etsy) friends, Lady Steel.

What's your name?
Kathy, which is rather boring so my husband chose Lady Steel for me to promote with.

Where can you be found on the internet? (Website, Twitter, shops, blog, etc)
http://88Links.etsy.com
http://twitter.com/88Links
http://twitter.com/faeteam
http://88Links.blogspot.com
http://companies.to/88Links
http://www.flickr.com/photos/88Links

Describe yourself in five words.
Fun, Thankful, Curious, Happy, Sarcastic

If you were a color, what would you be?
Purple because it's a mix of the basics but becomes its own power.

If you were a "Dungeons and Dragons"/fantasy character or creature, what would you be?
Woodland elf. I always fancied the tall, mystical Tolkien elves.

If you could live anywhere (or anywhen), where/when would it be?
Medieval England was always my fantasy. Learning about history and the conditions, now I would choose somewhere warm and gorgeous like Hawaii or Mexico.

What is your greatest dream or goal?
Find happiness in everyday.

What was your very first piece of art? How long have you been an artist?
I've been crafting with found materials since childhood. I remember being proud of a sock horse marionette I made, thinking it would get me a part on the Muppets.

If you sell your art, how did you get started?
I began selling jewelry after being laid off from the hospitality industry in October, 2008. A newspaper article about Etsy brought it to my attention and I opened my shop, 88Links, in November 2008.

What is the strangest thing you've ever made?
A locking slave collar for a couple...

Pick your favorite project/artwork- what is it and what inspired you on it? If you'd like to share, tell a little about the process you used from inspiration to completion of that project.

I love animals so my favorite project is my Etsy icon, Slinks. Slinks lives a life of his own as he guards my patio. He is a swimming dragon made entirely from handmade steel rings. The inspiration came from a bamboo dragon I received as a gift. Staring at it one day, I realized he would be perfect in steel! It took an entire day to roll 12 ga wire and saw rings, by evening I had the body completed but I couldn't stop. In front of the television, after dinner, I absent mindedly kept putting rings into, and taking them out of, his imagined head. Before I knew it, his face was looking back at me. He is like a pet so if anyone ordered him, I would make another.

What kind of advice would you give to other artists?
Be your own cheerleader. If you like your art, that is enough reason to create.

What is your favorite:
Quote? "I Believe"
Book? Love to read fantasy, history, culture, biographies. I will read anything even a catalog.
Season? Autumn
Animal? Dog

Thanks for letting me interview you, Lady Steel! (I love that dragon so much!)
Tune in next week when I hopefully remember to make the next Talented Tuesday post. ;)

Trove Thursday- Be My (Elven) Valentine

Arg, I missed Talented Tuesday again this week, didn't I? I'll try my hardest to get the interviews going again next week. The good news is, I am doing a Trove Thursday post on schedule. This week's theme is in honor of Valentine's Day coming up and is called Be My (Elven) Valentine. Did you expect anything else from me? ;)

Treasury 1/14
If you're viewing this post before 6:15pm Saturday night (the 16th), you can find the treasury by clicking here. If you're reading this after that, click the image to go to the flickr page then click "all sizes" above the image, and it'll take you to a bigger version. From there, just type the username (that's the name in grey under the images) into your browser's address bar and add ".etsy.com" (minus the quotes) to get to the relevant shop. For example, the first one will be magickmermaid.etsy.com.

The "Alternates" are the ones that the curator of the treasury picks that don't show up for anyone else (at least not until they're switched in), so you get a top secret peek at them here. ;)

To make the linking even easier, here are the items:
1.) "Elf Sweethearts 8x10 Archival Giclee Fantasy Fairy Print" by magickmermaid.
2.) "Fairy Romance...Ruby and Emerald Sterling Wrap" by GoddessAdornments.
3.) "A'maelamin 5x7 Fine Art Print" by twosilverstars.
4.) "Forevermore" by pimpandpaint. (Alternate)

Lots of geeky (mostly video game) plushies

I've made a whole bunch of video game and generally geeky dolls recently, and since it's past the holidays, that means I can share them. Yay! This is going to be a very image-heavy post, though. I warned ya. ;)

First up are the dolls I custom made for the same person who wanted the Henry Hatsworth doll for her husband. I'm so glad they both like them because I think they came out so cute! :D These two dolls are from the same game ("Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure"), but since I still haven't played it yet (I did buy it, though! I'm waiting until I finish Zelda: Spirit Tracks before I start it because I have this awful habit of getting distracted before I can finish a Zelda game), I had to go off of pictures of the characters.

Meet Cole and Weasleby:
Cole and Weasleby (Henry Hatsworth) Plushies

(Click to view the smaller images larger)
Cole (Henry Hatsworth) Plushie Cole (Henry Hatsworth) Plushie

Weasleby (Henry Hatsworth) Plushie Weasleby (Henry Hatsworth) Plushie

The kid is Cole and the other one is Weasleby. They're both almost entirely crocheted from acrylic yarn and have felt and polymer clay bits added (the suspenders, the strap of the glasses, the belt, and the band around Weasleby's hat [you can't see it well in these pictures, though] are felt, and the glasses and cane are polymer clay), and the facial details are painted on with fabric and acrylic paints.

These two came out so cute; I'm very very proud of them. :D

The other dolls I made lately were for my fiancé as Christmas presents. These four were entirely from patterns so I can't claim the creativity and skill with them that I can with the above dolls. Someday I'll design my own Mario crochet things, though! For now it was just easier to make these off an already existing pattern. Most of the patterns came from this awesome crochet blog; the tiny mushroom came from here.

Super Mario Bros Plushies

Two mushrooms (one's on a keyring- Josh keeps this on his laptop bag), a Fireflower, and a Bobomb.

Once again, click the images to see them larger:

Random present for Josh:
Crocheted D4 (4 sided die)

Okay, so it's still kinda wonky looking, but I'm slowly making my way towards a crocheted die that looks like a die. I figured I'd start with a 4-sided one since that's the easiest of the shapes (ie has less sides to crochet, lol). I'll keep working at it, but I gave this one to Josh.

And lastly, another doll of my own design... well, I used a pattern for the shape of the head/body and limbs (like I always do with my small dolls- it came from one of the fairy dolls here), but everything else is my own (the overalls, the hat, nose, ears, mustache, hair...).

Luigi (from Mario Bros)
Luigi doll

This originally started out as gift for my friend to give her grandson, but I didn't have enough time to finish it and get it to her before Christmas, so I ended up finishing it and giving it to my fiancé instead (he, too, really likes Luigi).

He's crocheted out of acrylic yarn and I used fabric paint for the L on the hat and the buttons on the overalls (yeah yeah, I think the buttons are the wrong color, but I didn't have a more yellow paint). The eyes are plastic safety eyes I painted blue.

I'm pretty happy with how he came out, except next time I make a Luigi I'm going to fiddle with the overalls more; they came out kinda thick in the front and I didn't cross them in the back the way overalls usually are. Still, my fiancé loved it. :D Pardon the Christmas tablecloth; as I was wrapping the crocheted gifts I realized "Eep! I need to get a picture!". His ears look off center, but that's just the crummy photo; they're actually fine.

I think I have pictures of more things I made for gifts, but those'll wait until later. This is enough art for one post, methinks. ;)

Heads up- changed the name of my Etsy shop

Whoops- I meant to mention this earlier. I finally got around to changing my Etsy shop name to match my business name; it's now Elfling Creations instead of "Elbit Enterprises". The link and my username are still the same http://merigreenleaf.etsy.com, so it just means the shop title finally is what it should be.

So if you have a link to me somewhere as "Elbit Enterprises", can you please update it to "Elfling Creations"? :)

I'm going to keep my blogs (here and on livejournal) as "Elbit Blog" because I really don't want to have to contact all the blogrolls and blogrings I'm in, but I figure since it has the tagline "Art Ramblings of the Elfling Artist", it's probably fine and not too confusing.

Trove Thursday- Roll a Charisma Check

I've been waiting for a Treasury to open up on Etsy, but silly me was off playing video games and missed it. Ah well, if I can catch one in the next day or two, I'll stick these things in one. Until then, I found enough relevant items on Etsy to fill two spotlights on byhand.me. ;) Since I've been geeking it out (ie putting together my own Dungeons and Dragons game), I decided, hey, that's a good theme for this week's Trove post! So without further ado, here are my picks for the Roll a Charisma Check Trove (why Charisma? Because it's my favorite stat, of course!). So get your D20s handy!

I'm not linking to everything individually this week since there's so many, but don't fret! You can click the items to go to their listing pages. Which you'll probably do, because I just cast Charm Person on my loyal blog readers. ;)

52 Books in 52 Weeks and other book challenges - 2010

Yup, I'm going to try again this year to get to 52 books, or at least beat my 2009 score of 47 books. I'm going to include in 2010 the Discworld book I started in late December, but everything else I was in the middle of reading, I'll just restart.

To continue from last year, I'm going to use this post to keep track of the books I read for the 52 Books in 52 Weeks challenge group on Ravelry, and edit it when I add, remove, or finish a book. This doesn't just have to be for people on Ravelry, though! If anyone wants to do this, I heartily recommend it. :)

I'm also going to take part in a few other book challenges; I figure I'll be able to do those, too, since I'll be reading them for this challenge anyway. ;)

If you're interested in this challenge, you can read about it here. This ends 12/31/10.

There are four levels for this challenge:
-- Curious – Read 3 Fantasy Fiction novels.
-- Fascinated – Read 6 Fantasy Fiction novels.
-- Addicted – Read 12 Fantasy Fiction novels.

I'm going to aim for "Obsessed" because most of what I read is fantasy anyway. ;)

Challenge Completed! (I'm going to continue keeping track, though.)

----------------------------------------------------------------

More info on this challenge can be found here. This runs until 12/31/10.

For this one the levels are:
**Newbie 2 books by J. Austen, 2 re-writes, prequels, sequels, or spoofs (by other authors)
**Lover 4 books by J. Austen, 4 re-writes, prequels, sequels, or spoofs (by other authors)
** Fanatic 6+ books by J. Austen, 5+ re-writes, prequels, sequels, or spoofs (by other authors)

I'm going to aim for "Lover"; I've been meaning to reread all the Austen books anyway. The trick is going to be finding 4 non-Austen books that I actually want to read. (Don't say that zombie one. Ick, no thanks.)

Books read for this challenge:
1.) Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen finished 3/19ish)
2.) Persuasion by Jane Austen (finished 7/19ish)

----------------------------------------------------------------

More info on this challenge can be found here.

This one has a bunch of categories involved, and you have to read 2 books from each category. This runs until 12/31/10.
1. Young Adult: Any book classified as young adult or featuring a teenage protagonist counts for this category.
2. T.B.R.: ** Intended to help reduce the old T.B.R. pile. Books for this category must be already residents of your bookshelves as of 1/11/09.
3. Shiny & New: Bought a book NEW during 2010 from a bookstore, online, or a supermarket? Then it counts for this category. Second-hand books do not count for this one, but, for those on book-buying bans, books bought for you as gifts or won in a giveaway also count!
4. Bad Blogger’s: *** Books in this category, should be ones you’ve picked up purely on the recommendation of another blogger count for this category (any reviews you post should also link to the post that convinced you give the book ago).
*** Bad Bloggers: Is hosted by Chris of Stuff as Dreams are Made on.
5. Charity: Support your local charity shops with this category, by picking up books from one of their shops. Again, for those on book-buying bans, books bought for you as gifts also count, as long as they were bought from a charity shop.
6. New in 2010: This category is for those books newly published in 2010 (whether it be the first time it is has been released, or you had to wait for it to be published in your country, it counts for this one!)
7. Older Than You: Read two books that were published before you were born, whether that be the day before or 100 years prior!
8. Win! Win!: Have a couple of books you need to read for another challenge? Then this is the category to use, as long that is, you don’t break the rules of the other challenge by doing so! ;)
9. Who Are You Again?: This one isn’t just for authors you’ve never read before, this is for those authors you have never even heard of before!
10. Up to You!: The requirements for this category are up to you! Want to challenge yourself to read some graphic novels? A genre outside your comfort zone? Something completely wild and wacky? Then this is the category to you. The only requirement is that you state it in your sign-up post.

This is going to be the trickier challenge because there are so many categories involved; I may have to fudge the "Charity" one because there aren't any charity stores around here (is that a UK term?) so I'll likely read a used book for this one (because it's good to support small used bookstores), and I don't follow many book blogs, so for "Bad Blogger’s" I'll likely read what random friends and family recommend. For the "Up to You!" I may try to read two books in Old or Middle English, but it depends on how good I become at those languages this year, or maybe I'll do books with the main characters are animals.

Books read for this challenge:
Win! Win!
1.) The Fifth Elephant by Terry Pratchett (finished 1/19)
2.) The Woman Who Rides Like a Man by Tamora Pierce (finished 3/4)

Young Adult
1.) Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce (finished 1/26)
2.) In the Hand of the Goddess by Tamora Pierce (finished 3/3)

Older Than You
1.) The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien (finished 2/9)
2.) The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkien (finished 3/3)

Who are you again?
1.) Love's Shadow by Ada Leverson (finished 3/28)
2.) The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan (finished 8/29)

New in 2010
1.) Glimmerglass by Jenna Black (finished 5/21)
2.) Dragons of the Valley by Donita K. Paul (finished 11/17ish)

Shiny and New
1.) Lioness Rampant by Tamora Pierce (finished 7/23)
2.) Sandry's Book- Circle of Magic by Tamora Pierce (finished 7/25ish)

T.B.R
1.) Persuasion by Jane Austen (finished 7/19ish) - actually a reread, but I've been meaning to read it again for years.

----------------------------------------------------------------

I figure since I read so many British authors, this'll be a good challenge for me. :) This runs until 12/31/10 and I think I'm going to go for "Cream Crackered", especially if I read as much Terry Pratchett and Shakespeare as I think I will. ;)

The levels for this one are:
• "Put The Kettle On" – Read 2 Typically British novels.
• "Gordon Bennett" – Read 4 Typically British novels.
• "Bob's Your Uncle" – Read 6 Typically British novels.
• "Cream Crackered" – Read 8 Typically British novels.

Books read for this challenge:
1.) The Fifth Elephant by Terry Pratchett (finished 1/19)
2.) The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien (finished 2/9)
3.) The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkien (finished 3/3)
4.) Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen (finished 3/19ish)
5.) Love's Shadow by Ada Leverson (finished 3/28)
6.) Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett (finished 4/11)
7.) The Two Towers by JRR Tolkien (finished 4/12)
8.) The Truth by Terry Pratchett (finished 4/26)

Challenge completed!

----------------------------------------------------------------

And speaking of Terry Pratchett:

This one I'm also aiming high for- I think last year I read about 20 Discworld books, and I'll continue with the rereads again this year. So yup, I'm aiming for "Death's Apprentice" (appropriate, I guess, since I cosplay Susan, lol). This one runs through 11/30/10 and more info can be found here.

The levels for this are:
1-3 books - Cashier at Ankh-Morpork Mint
4-5 books - Guard of the City Watch
6-8 books - Academic at the Unseen University
9-10 books - Member of Granny Weatherwax's Coven
10-12 books - Death's Apprentice

Books read for this challenge:
1.) The Fifth Elephant by Terry Pratchett (finished 1/19)
2.) Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett (finished 4/11)
3.) The Truth by Terry Pratchett (finished 4/26)
4.) Thief of Time by Terry Pratchett (finished 7/22)
5.) The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett (finished 7/27ish)
6.) Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett (finished 8/2)
7.) The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett (finished 8/4)
8.) A Hat Full of Sky by Terry Pratchett (finished 9/1)
9.) Going Postal by Terry Pratchett (finished 12/12)

----------------------------------------------------------------

And lastly, I couldn't pass on a LotR challenge! This one is a little different and is more of a Read-Along, and runs until April including The Hobbit and the trilogy (thank goodness not The Sil! I'm not ready to tackle that one again yet!). I'm late starting this one, but I should be able to finish The Hobbit in the remaining 2 weeks of January. :)

Here's the schedule:
* January: The Hobbit at A Striped Armchair
* February: The Fellowship of the Ring at The Literary Omnivore
* March: The Two Towers here at Shelf Love
* April: The Return of the King at Just Add Books

Books read for this challenge:
1.) The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien (finished 2/9)
2.) The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkien (finished 3/3)
3.) The Two Towers by JRR Tolkien (finished 4/12)

I can't guarantee that I'll be able to finish all these challenges, but darnit, I'm going to try. I need to start reading and reviewing books more often. :)

D&D character (NPC) development

Someday I'll get to posting the art I made for Christmas presents and awesome things I've gotten recently, and get back into my posting schedule for Talented Tuesday and Presenting Pretties, but it's not this day (sorry- I've been feeling so lethargic lately that I'm all sorts of behind with everything). Today I'm just going to post about a drawing I did of the character who is going to be my main NPC for the Dungeons and Dragons game I'm going to be running. Yeah, I haven't felt up to doing much, but luckily I have been putting together said game.

Elfling drawing, 1st try at the character design

Oh man. Between not drawing in *months*, a black pen that's far too thick for the details that were originally on the drawing in pencil (I swear, it looked a lot better in pencil!), and taking a picture rather than scanning it in (that green is supposed to be a dark forest green, not a minty green), this picture is definitely not up to par with where I left off with drawings about a year ago.

That's not a tunic; it's a wizard robe that she hemmed to be knee-length so it doesn't get in the way when she's off Elf-ing about. I gotta work on the design for that, too. I wanted to make the robe look kinda bunched where it's tucked under the belt and bracers, but it didn't really work. And the longbow ended up looking like a banana. And her eyes... they definitely looked less bizarre in pencil before I inked it. Note to self: get better drawing pens.

Yeah, I definitely have to work on drawing again! I'm going to keep working at the character design, though, and will hopefully get a character sketch done that I'm more satisfied with. Then probably draw more NPCs. Because I'm crazy like that.

This is going to be my main NPC in the D&D game (as in she's going to be part of the adventuring party, rather than someone they meet once). She's an Elfling (Wood Elf/Halfling) fighter/wizard, although she'll be the first to admit that she's more fighter than wizard. She was raised as a Wood Elf (although she does know a bit about Halflings from her mother), generally acts and dresses like an Elf (she's slightly shorter and will occasionally go barefoot, but she's got the stealth, the archery skills, and the tattoos of her father's kin), and is entirely uncomfortable with being indoors or underground. In a tree is preferable, but she'll take anything outdoors. Except the sea. She doesn't like large bodies of water, either (she gets that from the Wood Elf side). She'd have preferred to be a regular Elf, but when her father realized she was using magic to help guard their camp (Wood Elves are nomadic; they don't have a home base, just tents), he had the good sense to send her off to the nearest wizard before she ended up catching the forest on fire or something. And have I mentioned that she has a much better sense of humor than you'd expect from a Wood Elf? (That's not saying much, though, lol!) Her personality is the only real Halfling thing about her; she's much more cheerful and charismatic and fun than you'd expect from someone who looks like a Wood Elf. ;)

Note to Ruthie and anyone reading this who happens to be in the D&D group: remember, your character won't know anything about my NPCs, so even if you now know a bit about her, they wouldn't know anything. Trust me, a character like this is going to leave yours scratching their heads because she's so ... well, contradictory. ;) I suppose I should have kept this secret, but I'm so excited about running a game and playing a character who is my favorite race/s. :D (She's not quite the Elfling that's my alter-ego, but she's close, so I'm happy!)

I'll probably be blogging more D&D-related stuff in the future, so don't mind me. :)

2003-2009 Art Meme

2003 - 2009 Meme by ~merigreenleaf on deviantART
My friend Niere did this game, so I decided to do it, as well. :) Click it to go to the DeviantART page, then click it again to see it full size so you can read it.

The first few years I didn't do much art because I was in college, then concentrating more on writing and roleplaying than art. I didn't really pick up art in a big way until late 2006; unfortunately, I don't have pictures of any of my early crocheted stuff, so my crochet ended up appearing under 2007.

It's crazy how much my art has improved- I can make things now that I never dreamed that I'd be able to when I first started crafting in 2006, and even my drawings (which I don't practice nearly as much as the physical art) have improved greatly. In 2003 I never would have been able to draw a dragon!

The problem is I keep finding more and more things to add to this; by 2008-2009 I was doing so many kinds of art that I needed way more than four spaces!

For 2010 I have a bunch of ideas: I'm planning on new designs for jewelry and costume accessories (and combining the two- like attaching my chain earrings to my costume ears), and I want to start making fantasy keychains and learning new weaves for chainmaille and knots for hemp. I'd also like to improve my skills with polymer clay and work on more icons and computer graphics this year. Oh, and get back to painting things onto fabric again; I haven't done that since early 2008.

And drawing; I want to work on drawing some more, too. I'm going to start by drawing some of my Dungeons and Dragons characters, so look for that soon. ;)

Happy new year!

Yeah, yeah, still not an art post (I'll get to that one of these days), but I did want to share some pictures from Christmas and new years eve. I had a lot of fun with family and friends (yay, board games and video games!), and got some great presents including the new Zelda DS game (I've been playing that far too much, lol), a special Celtic sister necklace (from my sis, of course!), books, and some cute clothes.

Right now I'm just going to do a picspam post with some of my favorite pictures from the holidays. :) If you want to see more, they're up on my livejournal here.

Me and Josh in front of the tiny Christmas tree (shrub?) Mom put up this year. I really like this picture. :)

Bunny ears!

It's so cute how much Josh loves the plushies I make him! :D You'll be seeing closeups of these dolls soon.

And these are from New Years Eve. Jake (my best friend's boyfriend) brought over his Rock Band game and Josh and Care (aforementioned best friend) took guitars, I got drums, and Jake sang.

Oh my gosh, I love playing the drums so much! Now I'm going to be asking for the Beatles Rock Band for my birthday this summer. I mean, if I love drumming this much to music I'm "eh" about (this game was a lot of grunge, punk, and heavier rock- definitely not my stuff), I can just imagine how much I'll enjoy drumming to music I actually like. :D

And looking at these pictures, do I ever wear my hair in anything but a messy ponytail? LOL!

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and I hope you all have a great 2010. The way I figure, 2010 has to be an improvement on 2009. :D
