Trove Thursday- Showing off the Blogfire Guild

This time around the Blogfire Carnival involves featuring artists in the guild, which I'll gladly do. The problem is that I love so much stuff from their shops that I couldn't narrow it down to just one person to feature, so I'm featuring a few shops instead. Even that's hard to narrow down because I love things from all my guildmates' shops!

To start, I think Wildwood's woodburnings are just so cool- they're fantastical and right up my elven alley! Medieval Knight Returns is my favorite:

KittyBallistic has so many cool things in her shop- such bright colors! This Green heart pendant necklace caught my eye:

I have to share this Ziplet - Felt Autumn Leaves on Patchwork by tiltcreations; I won one just like this from her last year and I love it so much (it's the perfect size for all my crochet tools!).

livngood makes lovely chainmaille and wire-wrapped jewelry; as much as I love all the chainmaille, the colors in this Mermaids Tears - handmade lapis and sterling silver necklace were too pretty to not feature this item. :)

And speaking of pretty jewelry, I also had a difficult time narrowing it down to one for fiveoclocksomewhere, too, but I think this Evantide Necklace is my favorite:

I'll just be over here drooling over the items my guildmates make. Don't mind me. ;)

Book review- Foundation (part of the Valdemar series)

Oops, I've been forgetting to make this post go live- I wrote this almost a month ago. *looks sheepish* While the power was out for about four days a few weeks ago I managed to finish two books, both part of the Heralds of Valdemar series. This is the first review- I'll try to post the other one next week. If you don't know by now, I'm just about as obsessed with this series as I am Discworld and The Lord of the Rings, so getting to read two Valdemar books that I hadn't read before was such a great experience!

The first I finished is Foundation, the 27th book in the Heralds of Valdemar series (I think? I've lost count at this point, lol). This is the first of what I presume is going to be a subseries trilogy; the second is due out later this year. Chronologically, it's near the beginning of the series, though. (Lackey jumps around with the books and doesn't write them all in the order that they occur, which I think is pretty cool because it gives more variety.) It's really difficult to explain this series to someone who hasn't read it without sounding crazy (I tried recently to explain Heralds and Companions and Tayledras and everything to my fiancé; I think I just confused him because there's just so much info that goes into this series!), so here's the wiki page about the world, if you're curious, and this link will take you to the small blurb about Valdemar, specifically. If you're into fantasy, I'll definitely recommend this series. It may not be epic like Tolkien's (the Valdemar books aren't young adult, but I'd say they're pretty close), but it's a highly detailed world.

Foundation is essentially a book about a young teenaged boy who is rescued from a horrible life by being Chosen by a Companion to become a Herald. Said main character, Mags, is extremely quiet and withdrawn and has never really known kindness, so it takes him a while to get used to being a Herald Trainee. He does make some friends along the way (notably a trainee Bard and Healer, as well as a few teens who aren't at the collegia but end up being part of the intrigues happening there) and he's able to come out of his shell a bit. He also picks up some training involving his Gift that allows him to eventually save the day. That's kind of par for the course with a book involving a Herald (outcast teen overcomes adversity and ends up being helpful), but Lackey is really good at writing characters, so none of them are alike.

I really like Mags- he's quiet and thoughtful but not really lacking in self-confidence despite his upbringing (or lack thereof), and that appeals to me. He may not be a character that you instantly love, but he's not one that has any annoying qualities, either. He just keeps to himself. I'm hoping in the next book in the series we'll find out more about the other characters; because Mags keeps to himself so much, we never learn too much even about his closest friends.

I was a bit iffy about this book because of less than stellar reviews I found and the fact that it came out a good five years after the last Valdemar book, but I'll admit that I was pleasantly surprised; I enjoyed this one just as much as any other book in the series (actually, more so that some- I'm not big on the Winds books). The only real problem I had with the book is that ending was rather rushed. The pacing of the rest of the book is steady, but the biggest action of the book takes place in about one chapter; I'd rather that had been flushed out more. I'm sure that seemingly random ending will fit into the next book, but I just wish more had gone into it in this one.

For some geeky observations, I'm kind of surprised that the characters in this book caught on to what the vrondi were, but I guess since this is only a generation or two after those things were set on watch, they haven't been completely forgotten like they are a few hundred years later. Whatever the reason, I caught on to what was going on long before the characters did, so when they pinpointed what was going on, I couldn't help going "finally!". lol!

I'll admit that when I first got this book, I was confused as to what the title referred to. I kept thinking "But there's already a Herald's Collegium, isn't there? There's been Heralds for ages!" This book directly follows chronologically the subseries that I'm most familiar with (The Last Herald Mage), so I couldn't figure out what changed to allow this one to be called "Foundation". Once I started reading this book, I figured out what I had wrong; I think I had assumed that the Heralds had always had a collegium like the Bards and Healers did (learning through different classes and multiple teachers) and only the Herald Mages were apprenticed (is that the word?) to an older Herald. I feel so silly for assuming that, though, because it turns out all Herald trainees were educated that way and that's where the term "Foundation" comes from: now the Heralds are getting the same kind of education as the Bards and Healers because there are too many Herald trainees to have them learn from a single teacher, so their collegium has been founded. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about Velgarth (I have been a fan for over a decade), so I feel like a fool for not catching this sooner. In my defense, it has been a few years since I last reread the series.

I'm torn between giving this book 3 1/2 stars and 4. I really enjoyed it and think it's a great addition to the series, but I'm not entirely happy with how the ending worked. I think I'll pick 4 stars, though, since the rest of the book was great. :)

Art update- my new occupation is "kobold haberdasher"

Wow, talk about an extremely delayed update. Sorry about that! I've been so busy with making presents and custom orders and working on a story that I've been forgetting to blog. Let's see if I can catch up...

Dolls
My fiancé was away last week for a wedding, so I was finally able to make him his late birthday present. This takes me to the title of this blog post because I spent this past weekend making a kobold complete with tiny hat, jacket, and carpet bag (I think that's what the bag's called?). Meet Heathen D. Pistolwhip, Kobold Sales Professional:
Heathen D. Pistolwhip, Kobold Sales Professional (In doll form, of course!)

Heathen is a character from Josh's (much neglected- maybe he'll update it again some day) webcomic Goblins Like These. You might remember the goblins I made him a few years ago.

Here's a view of the side:
Heathen D. Pistolwhip plushie

Nothing like crocheting a kobold with a fake mustache; I'd say this is the oddest plushie I've ever crocheted, but I'm not sure if that's true since pretty much all the dolls I make are odd. LOL!

The other doll I finished this month is this elf doll for one of my online friends:
Elf princess doll - wearing cloak Elf princess doll - hood up

She wanted a dark haired, brown eyed elf princess-type doll and likes green and purple, so this is what I came up with. I forgot to include her silver circlet in the photos, but she has a removable green cloak and a purple belt; the pouch on her belt snaps so it can be taken off the belt. It'd been a while since I got to make an elf, so this was fun!

Jewelry
Summer = a lot of birthdays, so that means it was time for my usual pink and black jewelry thing for my sister (that girl loves those colors the way I love green- to an obsession). She loves anklets and always wears the other ones I made her, so I made her another:
Black and hot pink chainmaille anklet

The bead styles alternate, but they're all hot pink and black. My sis is easy to make things for- if it's pink, she loves it. ;)

I also made another anklet, but this one was a custom order for one of my favorite customers:
Purple and blue moon and stars anklet

She wanted it in blues and purples and with a kind of moon and star design; luckily I had all those things, so I created this hemp anklet. :) (Note to self: get more of those charms- I'm almost out.)

I also made a few custom cartilage chain earrings for someone who's a big "Lord of the Rings" fan- she wanted a pair with extra posts on my Mirkwood, Rohan, and Gondor-inspired earrings:
Pair of cartilage chain earrings- Leaves of the Woodland Pair of cartilage chain earrings- Realm of the Horse Lords
Pair of cartilage chain earrings- The White Tree

I'm especially happy when I get requests for the "Leaves of the Woodland" one because it's my home forest. ;)

Writing
Remember that writing/art challenge I mentioned recently? I've been spending a lot of time working on my story for it. I can't give a word count yet because I'm still working on the outline and character sketches, but once I start the actual story I'll let you know how it's coming along. I'm having a blast with it!

The premise is that a young Messenger (you guys have heard me ramble about this enough- they're the priests of that world who specialize in delivering messages) has been possessed by an evil artifact; the unfortunate side effect is that the artifact turned the boy evil, but the main problem is that he's now hoarding all the mail he was supposed to deliver and is forcibly stealing it from other Messengers, as well. It's up to Raff, a slightly older, marginally more experienced (and extremely mischievous) priest to get to the bottom of this; the problem is that Raff is more charm than brains, so expect some ineptitude as the story goes on. (And should I mention the dragon?)

This also explains why I haven't updated my writing blog in a while; I haven't been able to work on my main character's story because I've been concentrating on the new one because it has a deadline. When I'm finally able to share the new story (I can't blog it until the fall), I'm planning on dividing that writing blog between my two characters and adding a third column- giving Cyn the one side and Raff the other, and possibly alternating what I post in the middle so I don't favor one character over the other. It would just be silly to make another writing blog when they're both friends and their stories are going to overlap.

So wish me luck- this is a 10,000 word story I need to have finished by November and I've never tried writing original fiction at that kind of word limit before!

Giveaway winner and birthday ramblings :D

Time to announce the winner of my giveaway! (Yeah, yeah, it's a day later than I had planned, but I had a family birthday thing yesterday.) I had 9 people enter with a total of 17 entries (some shared it in more than one place, so got extra entries), so I pulled out one of my D20s. If I had rolled an 18-20 I would have rerolled, but luckily I got a four:

And #4 on the list of entries is Smiss! Congrats, Smiss! I'll send you a message on Plurk letting you know that you won and so you can let me know what you want.

I really love doing these giveaways, so I'll definitely continue doing them yearly, or possible more often than that. I love getting to share my art with people. :D

And since this is a birthday-related post, I wanted to share some awesome art-related things that I got. ;) My friend Niere offered me a drawing of my choice (she's one of my favorite artists, so of course that made me grin like an idiot and do a little happy dance) and I asked for a drawing of the character from the next story I'm working on. I blogged all about this over on my writing blog, so go check it out! She's such a talented artist!

The other presents were from my fiancé; to give you an explanation about these drawings, he always draws his goblins on my birthday present wrappings (actually, he draws them on most things, lol) and we call birthdays "blarfdays" after one of said goblins. This year he went all out with the wrapping:

The thing that looks like a hoagie? It has Blarf saying "Not a hoagie! I swear!" on it, which is good because as soon as I saw it I went "Aww, you got me a hoagie! How sweet!". LOL! The small package has Igik looking like some guy from a metal hair band or something- this is a cd. The other two are movies that Josh made fake covers and reviews for- these are Gork (my favorite goblin! I even dressed as him last Halloween) and Boss.

Here's a closeup of the movies:

Turns out those actually were a cd and movies, although the hoagie really wasn't a hoagie. I guess Blarf was telling the truth!

A fancy blue and green metal water bottle for when I go geocaching (I already used it- it works perfectly and holds a lot of water which is good when I'm hiking), the new Hanson cd that I've been utterly longing for (I think this is my favorite cd by them yet!), and two Muppet movies. I'd been saying for a while how I want to see those movies again, but Josh lost his old VHS copies. I loves my Joshy! I'm keeping the wrapping papers, of course! (Well, I'll trim them down to size, but I always keep the random drawings Josh does for me.)

I got to hang out with Josh and my best friend on my birthday and family the day after, so it's been a very good week. :D
